Advance ticket question

You could be caught out if there was an RPI exercise at Brockenhurst that day, e.g. issuing leaflets there to prove that was where you boarded. (As per a thread recently where someone was caught out saying they had boarded at the stop before Liverpool Lime Street, when such an exercise was taking place, and their lack of a "leaflet" proved they couldn't have).

Am I missing something? I thought these "leaflets" were there to stop people asking to buy a ticket at the destination and say "oh I got on at [one station back]". The OP would already have the required ticket so are we now saying that having the ticket isn't sufficient? What about someone who had split tickets and these leaflets were being handed out at the split point?

Yes, that was what I was thinking! I am sure that there ar eother scenarios that come into play too. I hope we have not reached the stage where passengers with tickets have to prove where they actually got on the train!

In the previous thread I referred to that was indeed the case. The poster was trying to buy a ticket from the nearest station, when she had actually only changed from one train to another there, thus not passing through any barriers or ticket buying opportunities.

I agree this is not the same as presenting a ticket on exit that starts from a station you didn't board at. Similar principle though isn't it?

Just a update on this thread regarding the result of my journey, when I got on at London Waterloo, I was prepared to get off at Brockenhurst and then use my already purchased single tickets to travel back to Southampton,BUT!! after much arguing with my wife:mad: she said she thought it was a waste of time to go to Brockenhurst and come back again,much to my disagreement she insisted she was going to ask the Guard if we could get off at Southampton!!!.
The result was the Guard said we couldnt go thru the barrier at Southampton with that Ticket, But! he said he would sell us a ticket to a gain barrier access, at which point I showed him my 2 single (brock to soton) tickets I had purchased, he then said that's ok then you can use those tickets to go thru the barrier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So the moral of this story seems to be, is to ask the Guard on the day you travel.

By asking it meant that you were acting in accordance with instructions from staff, so the fact that you were breaking the terms of your ticket is moot.

In all cases, if you are "given permission by an authorised person", i.e. the guard specifically permits you to do something, then that's a separate issue entirely. Technically an "authorised person" can grant you permission to ride Aberdeen to Penzance, first class for free (not that anyone is likely to, but they have the ability to under the byelaws)

Surely you need to have proof you've been given permission, anyone can claim someone said it was alright.

The last time I was given authorised travel, the TM came over to the gateline with me and explained that he'd authorised my travel. I was let out of the station without having to provide a ticket. On a previous occasion, the TM wrote what was happening on the back of a seat reservation card, along with his phone number, so that if anyone wanted to query it, they could contact him.

Hence why you should check with the person authorising you as to how you should proceed should someone else question you.

By the way in future if I buy a advance from Waterloo to Brockenhurst, I could buy a single from soton airport to soton central, then I have the correct ticket to exit at soton,
has anybody any thoughts on this.

My advice is do NOT buy an additional ticket. You may or not know that the guard gets commission on tickets he sells on board.

I would suggest a guard is much more likely to be flexible with you if you are contributing to his beer fund.
