Advance Split Tickets 13/8?

Hi all,

I'm currently booked from Sheffield to Bristol Temple Meads this Saturday (tickets purchased on 13/7/22 from traintickets.com).

This is booked for the 16:01 EMR service to Derby 16:31, then 16:44 CrossCountry service to Bristol Temple Meads 19:36.

The split tickets for this are:
Sheffield to Derby, Advance Single, EMR only
Derby to Birmingham New Street, Advance Single, CrossCountry only
Birmingham New Street to Cheltenham Spa, Advance Single, CrossCountry only
Cheltenham Spa to Bristol Temple Meads, Advance Single, CrossCountry only

If I ask National Rail enquiries now, it proposes a route with EMR to London, tube, then GWR's limited service to Bristol Temple Meads. However, if I were to refund the original tickets and purchase this, it would cost an additional £110ish pounds.

I'm not averse to getting a hotel for another night, but would prefer not to pay for that!

What are my options?

Take the Megabus from Meadowhall Interchange to Bristol? Currently £14.96 exc booking fee/seat selection for the 1300 arr Bristol 1750 or Flixbus departing 1500 arriving Bristol 1925 currently £8.99 exc booking fee/seat selection.

Contact CrossCountry and ask them to endorse your tickets for travel via London. As you would otherwise be facing a delay of more than an hour (there are no XC services at all on Saturday), they are obliged to do so free of charge.

Of course they'd be likely to be difficult about this even on a through ticket, and on split tickets there is very little chance they will help you.

So get their (presumed) refusal in writing and then rebook yourself. And contact them after the journey to claim this back.
