I travelled from Colwyn Bay to Filey and back for a short holiday last week, complete with bicycle. I thus had seat reservations and also cycle reservations for the two legs which offered them (a total of 14 tickets!). Strangely I was given seat reservations in coach A of a Class 185 with bike storage back in coach C. This felt especially silly with TPE's robot announcer reminded everyone to keep their belongings with them or in sight. I ignored my seat reservations and sat where I could keep an eye on my bike and attached luggage instead 
Admittedly a lot of the trains I'm familiar with have cycle spaces in gangways or at the head of the train (such as 158s and Voyager/Pendolinos), but why not give a seat reservation in the same coach as the bicycle where possible?
