Changes to travel plans can be made anytime before the first booked train departs, subject to a £10 admin charge, per change, per ticket, plus any difference in fares. Moving from Standard to First class is included in this.

At weekends, some companies allow Advance ticket holders to purchase a weekend first upgrade instead, however, arrangements vary by company.

Virgin Trains allow advance purchase tickets to be upgraded to weekend first.

In addition to weekend upgrades (which are available on-board), if your tickets are for travel over the holiday period, then you might find that the simple 'Weekend First' upgrade is extended to every day : "Festive First" as East Coast call it (though the level of catering is also at the more basic weekend level during that period).

EMT do Weekend First, but with an Advance ticket you can only buy once you're on board the train (you can buy in advance at a ticket office for other ticket types).

Having recently seen how busy EMT 1st class can be at the weekend, i'm surprised they don't do that for all ticket types - don't be surprised if you can't upgrade due to lack of available seating.
