Advance First validity with rail disruption

On Tuesday we had Advance First Class tickets from Waterloo to Bournemouth but were impacted by the two tragic instances that afternoon. As a result we followed the advice of SWT staff to take a Reading train to connect to a Cross Country service to Bournemouth. A ticket acceptance policy was in operation by both GWR and CC.

My question is whether our First Class tickets were still valid? We took the view that for the SWT to Reading we were still entitled to sit in First which we did. The grey are was on the CC service to Bournemouth. As it happened the CC was standing room only the whole journey so no option.

As our tickets weren't checked for the entire journey we were unsure if were should even have been in First for the SWT leg or if we would have a right to sit in First for CC?

It's a First Class ticket. If it is valid for travel on a given train *at all*, it is valid in First Class.

It's a First Class ticket, so yes, absolutely.

Definitely valid in first class. The industry issued specific internal guidance to that effect a few years ago.

Indeed. I have even managed to use London Midland 1st class Great Escape tickets in Virgin 1st class before - great value

I seem to remember a thread where someone had a 1St class ticket for a FGW service which was cancelled, when the passenger boarded the following XC service they were denied entry to first class.

Cross Country can be rather funny about ticket acceptance, they'll let you sit in the seats (grudgingly) but don't think you'll be getting anything in terms of refreshments.
