Advance Fares Question

I know that this may be a silly question but is it legal to travel short on Advance Fares. For example , you can book an advance single from Shanklin to Peterbourgh for £19.65 with a railcard. However, the fare from Shanklin to London Waterloo is £27.10. Could you buy the Peterbourgh Advance and finish your journey in London?

Another Example being buying a Portsmouth to Westbury Advance for £3.30 with a railcard but only travelling to Salisbury as no advance fares are available to Salisbury from Portsmouth, the Anytime Single being £10.10 with a railcard?


I'm not intending to do any of this, i am just interested

No, neither case is valid. You are not permitted to start short or finish short on any Advance ticket.

The return portion of all tickets that I'm aware of, can be broken, started short or finished short.

Single and outward portions of most walk-on tickets can be broken, started short or finished short, but there are some exceptions.

Internal Super Off Peak returns and singles on Southern do not permit break of journey outside the london travelcard area.

This is a well known 'fiddle' among revenue staff in the Portsmouth area, hard to enforce on the railway but you may find you are booked on a specific sailing from the island.

I went further than just stating that he cannot break his journey on those tickets and explained where a break of journey is permitted, as he had heard previously that break of journey is permitted.
