I have purchased advance e-tickets for Kilmarnock to Carlisle, fare set by AWC.
Obviously it is only valid on the booked AWC Glasgow to Carlisle but is it only valid on the connection from Kilmarnock to Glasgow (which isn't bookable) shown on the itinerary on the ticket?
Without going into the detail, I'm getting a lift to Killie with someone who needs to be there about an hour and a half before my itinerary and would prefer to kill the time in Glasgow.

ToD didn't tend to show times for non-booked connections, so this is a slightly new scenario to me.

My understanding is that officially the requirements are at https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/tick...tickets/advance-tickets-terms-and-conditions/

The key bits being:

4. When and where the ticket can be used

4.1 Tickets are valid ONLY on the date and train service(s) shown on the ticket(s).

4.2 Where applicable, you must travel in the Class and reserved seat(s) shown on the ticket(s).

4.3 Tickets may only be used on the services of the Train Company (or geographic route where applicable) shown next to ‘Route’ on the ticket.

4.4 If the ‘Route’ also states ‘and Connections’, travel is allowed on appropriate connecting trains where shown on the ticket(s) or other valid travel itinerary.
and

6. Break of journey

6.1 You may not start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station except to change to/from connecting trains as shown on the ticket(s) or other valid travel itinerary.

4.4 looks promising, until you get to the bit at the end of the sentence "...where shown on the ticket(s) or other valid travel itinerary."

Theoretically you can amend an advance ticket, allowing you to get an earlier train to Glasgow and then have a longer wait there, but the practicalities of doing this (and whether an amendment fee will be charged) depend on which retailer you booked your ticket with.

As it is in effect not possible to be prosecuted for a minor ticketing offence in Scotland, and as Penalty Fares do not apply, I'd just travel. Worst case you're refused at the gateline or charged an Anytime fare (possibly minimum £10 if that's in force by then) for that segment. Most likely if the ScotRail train is just a connection it'll be accepted, maybe with a "you should use the booked train next time" comment.

In England this would be inadvisable, but in Scotland things are very different.

If really concerned you could ask the guard or equivalent before boarding, they will probably OK it in such a case.

We've had this before on the forums a long time ago, I'm not sure if it was me who asked the question. I will see if I can dig it out.

Who did you book the ticket with? As you know you will be arriving so early it might be worth seeing if you can do a fee free amendment and arrive in Carlisle earlier.

What exactly is stated on the ticket?

Spending time at the station, without breaking your journey, right?

I would always recommend obtaining the desired itinerary at the time of purchase; it is possible to request additional interchange time at the time of booking the ticket, if you book with the forum ticketing site.

What exactly is stated on the ticket and/or any accompanying reservation coupons?

The answer will depend on what you hold.

Of course
As you will see I did use the forum ticketing site and didn't spot how to get a long connection at Glasgow but not elsewhere (this is part of a split ticket ultimately to Stoke-On-Trent).

I think it would not be unreasonable to catch the 10:28; I'd check with the Guard but I am sure that would be fine.

Any more than that and it looks suspiciously like you are attempting to break your journey, which isn't permitted.

It's under advanced options; specify the place you want extra time:

The time you specify is added to the minimum.
