Adult braces

I've been told that I'm 99% going to need braces - got an impacted canine on top and also a few issues with the bottom teeth.

I'm 20 so feel self-conscious about looking younger, especially as I already get comments implying I don't look my age. Had a ScotRail inspector try to sell me a child ticket (maximum age 15) a few months ago for instance.

Anyone else here had them in adult life? How was it?

Not me, but a mate of mine did. Like you he was really self conscious but in reality nobody said anything and I don't think most people even noticed.

When you get to my age, you will be delighted that you look younger!

Lots of “influencers” and older people than you get braces. It’s really not a big deal. I’d rather have healthy teeth than worry what someone else thinks about what i look like

I get that and no doubt it will be the case but not an advantage at 20, feels like it's hard to be taken seriously at times. Adding in the braces will make me look like I'm in the middle of high school.

I honestly don't think you ought to worry, but I understand why you are.

I believe there are braces made from materials that claim to be invisible. I have no idea if they are really invisible or if they're suitable for everyone, but it might be worth asking the dentist? They may be more expensive than standard braces (and you may have to pay even if you are entitled to NHS dental care), but it might be worth having a chat with the dentist about your options, if you're worried?

I had braces put in when I was 28 and I still have them at 31 although I am nearing the end of the process and they'll be coming out later this year. I have steel braces not ceramic, which are the invisible ones, so are very visible and nobody has ever said anything about them.

Ceramic braces are pricier and not suitable for everyone. Ceramic braces are invisible unless you look closely and nobody is going to be looking closely enough to see them aside from the orthodontist and dental nurse!

If the appearance of your age is really a concern, you could consider growing a beard or dressing slightly differently (if you don’t already!)

I really wouldn't worry about being perceived to look younger.

I don't think I know many people (and not anyone of any importance) who would think that how old someone looks should indicate how seriously to take them!

I say this as someone who regularly works with young people and gives leadership opportunities to people based on their abilities. Sometimes I will have someone acting as a leader with younger people who looks no older than the people they are helping but that's never been an issue.

You aren't the only person to be offered a child ticket at that age; there are so many 16+ year olds pretending to be under 16 that many Guards probably have a distorted idea of what the average 15 year old looks like. I doubt many 16 year olds actually pay for adult tickets unless they look a lot older than that.

I can recall being on the train with football fans who would be "15" on the trains and then magically become "18" in a pub and usually they had no issues getting away with that.

People should not be so judgemental on age.
I'm fifty *coughs coughs* and people don't believe my age, they think I'm about 15 years younger at least (not boasting). I went to a clinic once for a blood test and they said 'Oh, Mr Trackman I have the wrong details.. can you give me the correct name, DOB, address please etc. - this is not a boast or being big headed or anything.

As Yorkie says, really don't worry about it, if I saw you it wouldn't even register in my mind you had braces or your age- like people with hearing aids, conical implants - it's not an age judgement thing.
Think I had braces from about 12 to 19, first time was because of a cricket bat blow to my mouth. As I got older I had too many teeth were in my mouth. Thing was, they were not happy to extract as there was nothing wrong with them, as I got older pain started so I had about 4 extractions then waited for things to calm down then have my bottom set reset, when I was about 18-19.
I was never bullied at school about it, rather the nickname of 'Jaws' from the Bond films which you can google. Anyway here's the Jaws 'love at first sight moment' with his to-be g/f; she never had a braces, it was a 'Mandela effect' .. again google.

I'm a bit hopeless at growing facial hair but am considering the wardrobe part to try and have a slightly more mature look.

I don’t know how helpful this is, but Invisalign is a brace that you take in and out and it’s very hard to see, hence the name.

I have heard of Invisalign but I think it can only be used in certain cases and is more expensive. Could be a possibility but I probably need to consult with some orthos first.
