As some of the Class 365s will be leaving the Great Northern Railway metals after the timetable change, and as I have only landed 5 out of the fleet of 40 for haulage, I would have to get my skates on and get cracking if I want to clear the class. In a rare instance of having a couple of midweek days spare outwith my quarterly meetings in London, I decided on this course of action while one of Birminghams finest Judas Priest came on the tranny with the title track from their 1978 album Hell Bent for Leather while I was searching some clever ticketing options and also invoking the official doublebacks along GNR metals as well. My overnight accommodation would be at the Generator Hostel in Tavistock Place, which is a ten minute walk away from Kings Cross station via Judd Street.
It was an early rise and out of the door just after 05:10 for the 10 bus to Glasgow Central, then over to Platform 2 to board the 05:40 London Euston via Trent Valley Railway formed of dud 390104. 221106 was in Platform 1 on the 06:01 Plymouth via Leeds and Birmingham while over in Platform 4, dud 220022 was on the 05:50 London Euston via Birmingham. During the southbound run to Lancaster, 66413, 507, and 0xx, alongside various Class 68s and 37404 were all spotted at Kingmoor. Just south of the yard, 68017+016 were hauling containers southbound. At Oxenholme 185114 was on the Windermere shuttle.
As I bailed at Lancaster, this gave me the chance to see what would be on the 07:48 ex Barrow in Furness Manchester Airport. Sadly, this was dud 185103, so declined that. 156490 (required) was on the 08:02 Morecambe shuttle for the school run I would imagine. I hopped on dud 221106 that was on the 07:57 ex GLC EUS via Birmingham for the southbound run to Crewe, spotting 319369 just north of Preston station, and 319382 on the Liverpool LS local and 156427 on the Blackpool North limited stop at Wigan NW. After alighting at Crewe, it was immediately over to Platform 3 from Platform 5, which is adjacent as it is the same island. I hopped onboard the 09:02 London Euston via Stoke-on-Trent LM service formed of required 350124 for a run to Kidsgrove. It was a short fester before boarding the 09:21 ex Crewe Derby, formed of dud 153319 for some dogbox action all the way to Derby via Stoke-on-Trent and Uttoxeter.
It was onboard the 10:40 ex Cardiff Central Nottingham formed of required 170111 for a run to Beeston, spotting 56303 on the rail grinding machine. It was then over to the London platform to board the 11:11 ex Nottingham London St Pancras formed of required 222013 for the southbound run to Leicester. Both the 11:53 ex Sheffield and the 12:00 ex Nottingham London SP were dud, so switched my attention to the 12:18 ex Birmingham Stansted Airport. This was formed of required 170639 so hopped onboard for a run to Peterborough, spotting 66504 hauling containers westbound at Melton Mowbray, and 66760 and 768 in the yard at Peterborough north of the station.
After alighting the train, I rapidly made my way over to Platform 2 for the 13:16 London KX formed of required 365516 for a run to Welwyn North, spotting 66059 at Biggleswade heading northbound with open trailers. It was over to the northbound platform for the 14:35 ex KGX Cambridge formed of required 387126 to Hitchin, then the 14:52 Peterborough formed of dud 365502+ required 365511 to Huntingdon. A 10 minute or so fester saw me returning south on the 15:33 formed of required 387115, with me deciding to have a roll of the dice and bail at Arlesey. It is noted that the trains are timetabled to pass each other here within a minute of each other, however, I was lucky in that there was a slightly early arrival southbound with the 15:58 ex KGX running a minute or so behind schedule. I hopped onboard the aforementioned 15:58 that was formed of required pair 365541+503 for a run to St Neots.
It was over to the London platform for the 16:41 ex Peterborough formed of required 365514+ dud 518 for a run to Biggleswade, then on the 17:07 ex KGX Huntingdon formed of required pair 365527+538 for a countryside style bus stop bash to Sandy, arriving 4 or 5 minutes later. I returned south to Hitchin on the 17:15, which was also the return of recently fresh duds from earlier 365503+541. Having purchasing some tea and something light after nipping to the lavatory, it was onboard the 17:42 ex KGX Cambridge formed of a very heavily loaded dud 387127 (I had that when this first batch of 29 Class 387s were south of the mighty Thames) for a run to Ashwell & Morden scoring the flyover. Of note, Ashwell & Morden has trains timetabled to pass each other within a few minutes of each other during the standard pattern timetable, so was able to score this on a linear hop.
I had a brief fester of 5 minutes or so before boarding the slightly delayed 18:01 ex KGX Royston formed of required pair 365530+528 for another countryside type bus stop bash to Royston. Due to a fault with the level crossing south of Royston station, the train came to a halt and was held for a while. Eventually, it was on the move arriving at Royston 12 minutes or so behind schedule. After the 20 minutes delayed 18:17 ex Cambridge KGX departed and with the terminating train I had arrived on was still sitting in the Cambridge platform, an announcement was made that the 23 minutes delayed 18:20 ex KGX Kings Lynn would be departing from the opposite platform, so it was over the footbridge to the London platform to board required trio 365501+505+521 with me positioning myself in the rear portion. On arrival at Cambridge, I made my way to the front portion via the platform to board 501 to continue to Watlington, arriving 30 minutes behind schedule.
It is noted that Watlington station has staggered platforms either side of a level crossing, with no footbridge between the platforms. I returned south on the same train to Downham Market on the 20 minutes delayed 19:44 ex Kings Lynn KGX, having clawed back 10 minutes or so of the delay. It was over the level crossing once the train had departed to the opposite platform for the 20 minutes delayed 20:12 ex KGX Kings Lynn formed of required 365533 for the run all the way to Kings Lynn, and back on the 12 minutes delayed 20:37 south to Cambridge. I alighted here to see what would be on the 20:45 KGX, but that was delayed, so having seen what the front train was that the ex Kings Lynn would couple to, I boarded the front portion as that was required 365508 for the run back to London KX arriving 10 minutes behind schedule at 22:41. After having a quick eyeball to see what was on departures calling at Finsbury Park and with them being duds from earlier, I brought the days action to an end and went to check into my accommodation.
After a reasonable nights sleep and checking out at 09:00, it was a short walk to Kings Cross with one thing in mind. That was to solely concentrate on the 21 remaining Class 365s. I would take any required Class 387s if need be for a positioning move, however I am not too fussed about those at this moment in time. I would predominantly be doing Kings Cross Finsbury Park leaps as the frequency is roughly every 15 minutes, give or take a couple of minutes either way. I would also have the London Underground Victoria Line as a get out of jail free card if need be as well. Furthermore, I would also be keeping a lookout for any required Class 365s on the xx14 and xx44 Cambridge and Kings Lynn non stop KGX Cambridge so as to see if it would be possible for me to do a run to Cambridge and back. Due to most of my moves being Kings Cross Finsbury Park, I will simply present them in list form similar to how myself and others do so for London Underground moves, with requirements highlighted in bold.
365528+529 09:22 KGX FPK
387111 09:40 FPK Potters Bar (66006 was spotted on the northbound side at Hornsey)
387121 10:03 Potters Bar KGX
365532 10:34 KGX FPK
365521+507 10:43 FPK KGX (delayed 3 minutes)
As the next 7 departures that call at Finsbury Park were dud and in between departures, I was looking out for the 11:14, 11:44, and 12:14 non stop Cambridge, which were all dud. Observations over at the Intercity side (Platforms 0 8) were that required and my final Hull Trains Class 180 180109 was on the 11:48 Hull (not possible for me to get that later on, as it arrives Doncaster after 20:00 with no way to get north to Edinburgh), various VTEC IC125s, and 43044+080 on the EMT hired in set. Of note, 67016 was sitting in the headshunt just north of Platform 0 outside the trainshed.
Further moves are below.
365518+512 12:22 KGX FPK
387110+119 12:28 FPK KGX (3 minutes delayed)
365519+506 12:52 KGX FPK
365513+517 12:56 FPK KGX (delayed 15 minutes)
365531+503 13:22 KGX FPK
As the 13:43 to KGX was delayed by 7 minutes and as I spotted a required Class 365 on the approach to FPK on my last move above (forming the 13:52 off KGX), I switched to the Victoria Line. First it was dud 11003+004 to Highbury & Islington, then dud 11071+072 to Kings Cross. It was one hell of a hike to the main concourse upstairs, but made it to Platforms 9-11 with 8 minutes or so to spare. Following moves are continued below.
365509 13:52 KGX FPK (the driver had to close doors and reboot the train due to a fault. Also, the auto announcements referred to West Anglia Great Northern service, now a defunct TOC similar to how Southern, Gatwick Express, and Thameslink are all defunct TOCs.)
365507+521 13:56 FPK KGX (10 minutes delayed. 66025 was spotted hauling VTG wagons southbound before the train arrived. Arrived into Platform 0 KGX)
365532+533 14:34 KGX FPK (I initially thought this was required 534, but 532 was dud from earlier and 533 from yesterday)
365512+518 14:56 FPK KGX (declined delayed 14:43 as it was dud)
365535+502 15:22 KGX FPK
387113 15:43 FPK KGX
As I have more or less seen what trains are on the standard pattern timetable, it was time to check to see what would be on the peak extras that would be calling at FPK. I was keeping an eye on to see if any Class 365s would be on the empty coaching stock moves from the depot at Hornsey, but most seemed to be a combination of Class 387s, dud Class 365s, or the Cambridge limited/non stop. If I wanted to head home via Cambridge, the 16:44 would have been my last option to connect into the 17:01 ex Stansted Airport Birmingham NS to pick up the 18:10 London Euston Holyhead and Wrexham that calls at Nuneaton, picking up the 20:09 at Crewe to Glasgow. Anyway, the 16:44 Kings Lynn was all dud, therefore that option was eliminated. I worked out the 17:22 would be my last option if I wanted to head over to Euston, and the 17:23 if I wanted to head home via York and Edinburgh.
When I saw that the 17:23 Royston had a pair of required Class 365s and the 17:22 Cambridge had a dud and a required Class 387, I went for the 17:23. This was formed of required pair 365510+539 which I took north to Stevenage. After purchasing some tea and something light, it was onboard the 17:55 ex KGX Harrogate formed of dud pair 43305+367 for a run to Doncaster, spotting 66(1)54 and 66704 at Peterborough and 66531 hauling containers southbound at Decoy Yard. After alighting at Doncaster having arrived into Platform 4 at 19:12, it was straight over to Platform 8 (of note, Platforms 4 8 at Doncaster are on the same island, making a less than 8 minute interchange theoretically possible. I had an alternative if this failed) to hop onboard the 19:18 ex Reading Newcastle that was already in the platform, formed of dud 221124 for a run to Darlington. At York, 66426+432 were spotted, with 150150 in Platform 8 on a Leeds via Harrogate, and 221129 on the 19:45 ex Edinburgh Bristol TM via Leeds.
Although I could have bailed at York or Newcastle, I decided Darlington as it would be the same platform, as I have been doing a few rapid platform changes at Finsbury Park earlier on today. On the approach to Darlington Bank Top, 66169 was hauling flatbed trailers southbound along the station avoiding line. It was a short fester before boarding the 20:19 ex KGX Edinburgh that was behind the ICXC, formed of dud pair 43315+314 for a partially entertaining run to Newcastle, where there were smartly dressed businessmen having a meeting and conversation on how to dodge paying tax. I could not believe what I was hearing, with me thinking that no wonder the country has ended up in the state it is in today. Anyway, 66(5)72 was spotted hauling GBRf wagons southbound in the loop just north of Durham station. It was then an uneventful run north of Newcastle to Edinburgh with the aforementioned businessmen having left the train. 66080 was spotted heading southbound near High Level Bridge, and 66xxx was hauling containers southbound at Heaton.
After alighting at Edinburgh Waverley, it was from Platform 2 to Platform 10 for the 22:30 Glasgow QS via Falkirk High formed of not surprisingly dud 170405 (my final Scotrail Class 170 (456) still eludes me). Of note, the 23:40 London Euston sleeper had 92038 facing Newcastle, with 90016 facing Carlisle. It was an unusual run to Glasgow QS, as this train called at Edinburgh Park (trains via Falkirk High do not normally call Edinburgh Park, but this is I believe due to late evening engineering works resulting in rail replacement buses to Larbert, Stirling, and Dunblane). The train was running to schedule until Croy, then was delayed between there and Lenzie resulting in a 7 minute delay. Arrival at Glasgow QS was 9 minutes behind schedule at 23:35, meaning that my only option to continue my journey would be the 23:52 Whats it called? Cumbernauld up the hill to Springburn, formed of dud 170428.
Overall, I have left my Class 365 requirements in a better position than it was when I started this exercise. My target was to get from 35 down to single digits, which I have done so as I only require 9 to clear the present fleet of 40, and also reducing my first batch of Class 387s down to 16. I have scored some new track with the sections being the Shepreth Branch (Great Northern Railway metals between Hitchin and Cambridge), and the Great Eastern Railway metals between Ely and Kings Lynn. It is noted that the only pieces of track I require for normal scheduled passenger services along Great Eastern Railway metals are both arms that lead to Stansted Airport. Furthermore, I have scored all of the stations except Drem, Musselburgh, and Edinburgh Gateway between Hatfield and Inverkeithing, Glasgow QS via Falkirk High, Helensburgh Central via Airdrie, and both Tyndrum stations.
