Administration Fees

Just a quick question, if I may. If you buy a ticket, but then return it to a ticket office without using it, are you liable to a £10 administration fee? My understanding was that this only applies to Advance tickets, but yesterday I was nearly charged this without my prior knowledge (as in I only found out at the Bristol TM ticket office). [I say nearly because I suggested that in past instances I have not been charged, which is actually true but only because I've accidentally set the wrong station on a TVM; specifically either Lymington Town, not Pier, or Cardiff Central, not Bay.]

Technically you have to fill the form in and pay around a £10 admin fee and either hand it in at the ticket office or send it to Customer Services for authorisation.

However, if you've only just bought it, and suddenly change your mind, i.e. within 30-60mins they can usually just non-issue it and give you a full refund.

The admin fee applies to ALL tickets. Some operators charge differently, between £5 and £20.

You can't refund an advance ticket AT ALL. You can, however, pay £10, AND pay the difference between your advance fare and another.

It depends on the reason, how quickly you return it, and the attitude of the staff.
