Adjustable width seats

Possibly the greatest advance in coach comfort since reclining seats is adjustable width seats. It means that you can pull the seats apart so passengers sitting next to each other get some more space and privacy.

How much extra does it cost to provide adjustable width seats? It would be nice if they became standard like reclining seats.

I don't know how you'd manage this without having a ridiculously small aisle, and it'd be pretty pointless tbh cos you might as well just go for wider seats

Adjustable width seats do not cause a significant reduction in the aisle width, and of course only cause a narrowing when the seats are pulled apart. If a full aisle width is required, for example for cleaning, then the seats can be pushed back together, which wouldn't be possible with wider seats, and wider seats do not give such a degree of privacy.

It is a fairly common feature of high specification coaches, but I haven't seen it on a coach dedicated to scheduled services, apart from iDBus between London and Paris.

People travelling together often leave the seats close together and of course if the adjacent seat is vacant then there will not be an urgency to pull the seats apart. The reduction in aisle width doesn't seem to cause any inconvenience from what I have seen.

I remember very fondly a school trip to Europe when aged 15, when I sat next to Louise on the way back, and ticked off more things than 1,000 miles in a B10M.

I checked the disability rules on whether it would be permissable, while the rules specify minimum seat width and a minimum corridor width of 700mm for wheelchair accessible areas they dont actually specify a minimum corridor width for non wheelchair accessible areas. Still I would be curious what kind of penalty it would cause on boarding/disembarkation and evactuation times.
