Ignoring the reasons why, see this thread: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/all-cross-country-services-suspended-23-08-26.306275/

Were the additional LNWR services from Crewe to take Birmingham passengers to/from Crewe so people could get to/from Manchester? As apart from early Mornings and due to any disruption XC don't normally operate any services via Crewe.

Considering the paths were available why couldn't the extras run to Stoke?

Taking passengers to Crewe for connections to Manchester would seem to make sense. Stoke isn't really set up for terminating trains from the south, and Crewe has not only much more flexibility in layout but also much better connections towards Manchester for passengers.

Probably more options from Crewe towards Manchester than from Stoke to Manchester. Especially when Avanti would be taking the extra passenger load for Stoke - Manchester with no XC running, and hardly anybody will catch the replacement bus Northern run
