Additional exit at Gatwick Airport platform 7

There is now an additional exit at the north end of platform 7 at Gatwick Airport, leading to the South Terminal coach stops. Exit for paper ticket holders only and no entry.

I wish they'd just bulldoze the entire station and start again.

I hope no taxpayers money was spent on an exit that doesn't go into the Airport and can't be used by people with non-paper tickets - which will be the majority of people before too long.

I am constantly confused as to how they managed to design Gatwick station to be so awful in terms of passenger movements.

I think they built it and rebuilt it at a time and design that was for the needs of the airport as it was then - times have now moved on and its going to take something inventive to change the station in any major way shape or form that doesnt have any part of it closing for a large period of time.

It almost looks like a perfect track for a platform 8 - if not for the escalator being right on the platform edge!

Perhaps it could be a north and indeed south facing bay(s), which would be short but might have some purpose - but a through platform would need some work.

Have just had a quick glance on the NR site - if they can make people go down/up on either ends of the platforms compared to what they do now then it would be a great improvement without much disruption i reckon

So far as I know, Platform 7 was, at one point, designed with passive provision for a Platform 8 in mind, but sadly it seems to have then been built simply so as not to preclude another platform being built, rather than being a definite template for its layout. I believe the chances of needing another Down Fast platform in the immediate future is probably fairly slim, provided nothing more than the half-hourly Gatwick Express and hourly ish North Downs trains remain the only ones which usually occupy platforms for any significant lengths of time.

Though of course Reading - Gatwick via the North Downs line was supposed to be 2tph by now (3tph on the NDL including the Redhill stopper). But that seems to have been kicked down the road, either because of the blanket deferral of new timetables, or because no-one can work out how to mitigate the traffic effects at the various level crossings.
