Add freedom pass to Google wallet

Is there a way to add TfL freedom pass to Google wallet or other to negate the need for carrying the pass?

No there isn’t. You must carry the physical card with you.

Google Wallet won't have your picture on it. Also, what's stopping someone using your Freedom Pass and Google Wallet at the same time?

It would be entirely possible to create a secure digital freedom pass that can be loaded into Google Wallet and had a photo of the customer (either using [rotating?] barcodes, like the rest of the rail industry - or using Google's Smart Tap NFC HCE).

I'm confident you could do something which displayed the customer's photo with a custom pass template (and imageModulesData.mainImage?). If you were going to do this properly, you'd issue it digital-only.

Whilst I fully accept that it could be done, I am not sure it would be a decision for TfL to make. Most Freedom Passes are also a national product in the shape of the ENCTS pass and need to be subject to a nationally agreed standard. Whether the rest of the country is ready, or has the will, for such a change is something I would doubt.

Does the ENCTS legislation actually go as far as stipulating the medium on which the concession is offered, though?

1.30 The regulations set out the position and format of the standard elements of the ENCTS pass - the holder’s photograph, their name, the expiry date, the hologram, the unique identifying number, the ITSO logo, the rose logo, and the ribbon background. They also require ENCTS passes to be ITSO smartcards. This means that, where bus companies have installed ITSO smart readers on their buses, the passes will be read electronically. Where buses don’t have ITSO readers, the passes will simply be shown to the driver.

I believe Google Wallet supports this - though whether you can describe it as a "smartcard" when it's not physical is perhaps one for further debate

Google Wallet has ITSO support so I believe it's a case of lack of will rather than lack of ability...
