Chaos is the answer, rush hour all ways will be fun I don't think. Why are there so many issues with OLE between Paddington and Reading, happening much too frequently

It would appear a roof access panel on an 800 has somehow opened and come into contact with the overheads causing some damage.

It’s suggested part of an IET (not the pan) came into contact with the wires. Possibly 1L70 800006 but nothing definite.

I believe I’ve seen it already reported elsewhere on social media and the ilk so can confirm above to be all correct.

1x HEx 387 with over 200 passengers on board was evacuated to the ballast between Hayes and Southall; then rescued at 5mph with a non-Dellner 57 with adapter coupler as the Dellner loco was at PZ.

Fortunately there were no other pure-electric trains on the afflicted line at the time.

Why are there so many issues with OLE between Paddington and Reading, happening much too frequently

Anecdotally the number of incidents has always been relatively constant - but in the 25 years since that stretch was electrified we’ve gone from all Diesel to virtually all electric; so it seems like more as it is much more visible when there is an incident.

NR have issued a BTET (blocked to electric traction) notice, advising IETs to run on diesel from Reading UFN. This is the Up main only and is in place between Airport Jct and Friars Jct.

Happened about 12:00 yesterday my train made an emergency stop just outside Ealing Broadway and then continued on its journey

The wires were not down but as someone above posted a roof panel was loose and was stood up on top of 800006, this displaced several droppers on the OHL and also damaged at least one OHL registration arm.

As @rd749249 put, trains cannot run on electric on the Up Main between Airport Jn and Friars Jn. This means the Newburys and HEx would have to run relief line; which hasn’t got the capacity for 6 extra trains per hour, so the Newburys and Didcots are only running West of Reading, and HEx is running reduced frequency.

The damage caused to the OLE was more than they could hope to fix overnight last night, so all that was done last night was make the line safe for Diesel trains to run.
