Activity in Totton (Southampton) Goods Yard

Evening all, over the last couple of weeks I’ve noticed 6 or 7 EWS or Freightliner flatbeds in Totton Sidings, when I first noticed this on Mon 12th Dec I spent from 9.30am through to 11.30am hoping to catch a Loco picking these up as I thought this was used for storage over that weekend for Freightliner Millbrook but they have not used Totton Sidings for over 10 years for this & use to use Marchwood but I don’t think they even do this anymore, these were still there until at least Thus 15th then gone, thought no more about this until today when I notice there back & seems slightly more. Any idea’s why their there & if there Freightliners or EWS flats ?

Hi. I was also wondering why they were there! I first saw them in the evening of Thursday December 1st sat there all alone in the dark with a flashing tail light. It's still a mystery!

I have no idea why they are there, or even that they were there, but, im gonna take a stab in the dark and take a guess that they could be Freightliner wagons, possibly there due to space restrictions at Southampton Maritime as the building work has started for the new cranes their getting there. Altho that said, none of the work ive seen going on so far has affected the track layout at the terminal, altho i been to busy of late to stop on the bridge and have a proper look.

An 'as required' trip working (6B47/48) runs from Eastleigh yard to Totton
and return on Thursday mornings.

thought no more about this until today when I notice there back & seems slightly more. Any idea why they're there & if there Freightliners or EWS flats ?

The trip is a DBS working - I'm told that they are establishing a wagon
maintenance facility of some kind at Totton, but I don't have any more
detail, I'm afraid...

The trip is a DBS working - I'm told that they are establishing a wagon
maintenance facility of some kind at Totton, but I don't have any more
detail, I'm afraid...

Seems a good idea as they completely replaced a whole siding with new trackbed & anti weed netting & the other sidings they replaced all the bad sleepers a couple of years ago when Totton goods yard was used for making up the sections of track for the Southampton tunnel upgrade.
Have photos over the last 50 years how it was, may well post if enough interest.

Any photos available of the old Didcot-Totton Domestic Coal HEA workings or oil workings, or Westbury-Eling Wharf ARC's!?

Morning, Anyone know the movement times for this ?, went down there last Thursday, no movement :cry: & this morning as there is suppose to be a movement on a Thursday at some point:roll:.

There was Redland Tile traffic from Rugby to Elling Wharf in the early 1980's in PNA wagons in Private livery - traffic ceased due to excesive breakages. If anyone can lay hands on a back copy for Modern Railways (in I think 1980) - there is an excellent article on Soton Railfreight. (Dibles Wharf for example !)

Id like to see pictures of trains at Totton and especially Eling wharf, i go in there often in the truck and have always wanted to know what went on there, alot of the tracks are still there.

Dibles Wharf is at the end of a spur on the left from the down line to Southampton Terminus and Eastern Docks, just beyond Northam Jn. The line basically went round the gasholders - the view on Google's satellite image shows the route as a line of parked cars... Postcode SO14 5QY

It's in Northam,the connection to the main line was next to the gas works .It went across Britannia Road and then into the docks.I remember in the early 70's it was worked by a B4 dock tank No 30096 "Corrall Queen". Corralls were I believe a coal merchants.

There was also the Eling Wharf branch that came off a trailing point just south of Totton, and then ran via a curve and over a manual crossing on High Street, Totton into a wharf and tar works. The remains of the gates are still there and there is or was also a gauging post extant next to the Down line. I shall be featuring photos of the the South West Tar Distillers and their lorries, taken in the early 1950s, in a future issue of Vintage Roadscene.

By the way, are Brockenhurst p/way sidings used at all these days?

Yes, Brockenhurst still sees on-track machines stabling in the sidings there.

Was never confirmed ,think it's on site maintenace as yesterday saw a wielding set on one of these wagons being used
