Also, what's the town like as a place?

Pleasant in a slightly bland kind of way. Surrounded by nice countryside, the wealthy residents of which come to Guildford for their shopping. There's not a whole lot else going on though because people tend to go into London for their cultural activities.

It has a picturesque and fairly ancient High Street sloping down to the riverfront, much of which was messed up in a 60s/70s road scheme.

I don't have any accommodation suggestions I'm afraid.

Maybe you could consider staying in Godalming instead, There is a lovely Real Ale pub in the Town Center called The Star.

I've just booked 2 nights in the EasyHotel at Croydon in 2 1/2 weeks time, so will feed back. Total of £48 for 2 nights close to London at half term, can't really complain as long as I sleep ok and it's clean!

Reviews I've read all seem to say they are clean but basic, no Tv etc, but that don't matter to me as I don't tend to watch tv anyway!

Situated immediately next to East Croydon station.

Barnetby B&B (Holcombe Guest House).

Less than a 5 minute walk to Barnetby station straight down a road with not much traffic at all. A Onestop is on the road too so if anyone requires food they can go there.

The family room was a good size with comfy beds. The only problem with the beds was that they were quite squeaky. There was a kettle (tea bags provided) and a good sized bathroom with a shower.

I was impressed and I recommend it.

Sutton Coldfield Travelodge

Usual Travelodge bed aside, a good hotel located behind a Harvester so sheltered from road noises, a bit on the small side (compared to other travelodges), opposite a Greggs, near a Tesco Express (and other shops).

Around a 10 minute walk along residential streets from Wylde Green station on the Cross-City line (so around 20 minutes from New Street). Considering I paid £29 for the room booking it earlier in the month is a good price for a rather good location, one to go onto my list to remember, especially with the reasonable priced Harvester next door.

(Also a benefit of being a travelodge is being able to tip up at 21:30 to check in without any issues)

I stayed at the EasyHotel Paddington recently.
The corridor carpet was pretty shabby, but the rooms were perfectly clean. Soap dispensers and (decent) towels were provided. The bed was against a wall, so possibly not great for 2 people.

There was little sound-proofing; although nobody was being noisy, I could hear the person upstairs moving around until the early hours.
There isn't even a shelf, so nowhere to put anything except the floor.

Perfectly located for East Croydon station too - 1 minute walk tops - and there's a Sainsburys local directly opposite for provisions. I usually pay the few quid extra for the window, but this time of year I'm guessing it's dark most of the time anyway so it doesn't really matter. I hope you like orange!

Thanks, I've paid for a window. I also typo'd in the post you quoted. It was £21 a night, so £42 plus the booking fee.

I intend on sleeping and showering and that's it, so as long as clean and decent bed I'm happy. The cheapest Travelodge or premier inn I could find for my dates was £99 a night anywhere near to London.
I did notice the abundance of orange in the photos online.

No difference in prices between a Window or Windowless room, although hiding the booking fee until after you hit submit the payment details must be against some code of practise?

I didn't fancy an early morning bus on the Saturday to get me to London in time for the 08:30 Eurostar to Paris

Mercure Darlington Kings Hotel

Stayed there inbetween doing the BLS tour to Cleethorpes and the PLEG event at Shildon the next day.

Being in Darlington town centre (about 10 - 15 min walk from the station), it can get rather noisy at night when the pubs and clubs are closing. One bizarre feature if you are staying in one of the top floors is that you have to get the lift to the second floor then walk along a winding corridor to another lift to the upper floors. Other than that the Hotel was OK.

Euro Hostel, Glasgow

Location is pretty much outside Central station, so less than 5 minutes to Central & 10 minutes to Queen Street, as from the name it is a hostel but I was in a private room which featured a bunk bed. Ensuite bathroom, bit noisy on the station side due to being near clubs.

Basic, But for somewhere to use as a base its ideal.

I didn't have a good night in the Easy Hotel, Croydon.

Location is pretty much spot-on, 3 minute (with traffic lights and dodging trams) walk from Easy Croydon station so ideal for any early morning movements from London. Basic rooms (i.e. bed, little bin, towels), the bathroom was a wet room.

However I had a window room, the window does a good job at keeping the noise out however it is a blind rather than curtains, a cheap blind which leaks light around the edges, the AC unit seemingly can't be turned off (so a constant noise from the unit), and the bed makes a Premier Inn bed feel good, rather hard (even when I sat on it, there was no give downwards).

Location is fine, but if I was paying more than £19 for a late booking I would look elsewhere.

Woodcote House Hotel, Hooton

Stayed there prior to the BLS Merseyrail tour on Sunday. Quiet location about 10 min walk from Hooton station, and the only traffic noise was from the M53 about 1/2 mile away. Most of the rooms are in an outhouse at the back of the hotel. Delicious breakfast.

I have stayed there before and i have to say that i also found pretty good, the only point that i would make would be that the rooms were a tad on the small side, but as I said apart from that it was a decent hotel.

Travelodge Rugby Central

The usual Travelodge hard bed, etc, only mentioning as the rail station is just a 1 minute walk away. However, due to the proximity of it to the railway the noise from trains is high. Even with closed windows, it's not much fun when you're trying to rest and all you can hear is guards whistling passengers to hurry up, 350s and their door buzzers and freights making a racket!
