Has anyone stayed in the Travelodge Central Waterloo? I'm about to book it, so could anyone who has stayed in it please post your reviews!

I have.
It's quite a new Travelodge, so the rooms are still quite tidy.
It has a narrow frontage, but it goes a long way back, so the rooms are generally quiet.
I've stayed three times for about £29 each time in their sales and have had no problems.

This is overseas, not UK, but deserves a mention:

Timhotel ( French budget hotel chain ) at 10 Rue Philippe Girard in Paris, just down the road from Gare du Nord.

Rooms 406 and ( presumably 506 ) above it have a perfect view of the approach to Gare de l'Est and the angle is ideal for photography; most of the morning the light is perfect as well. On a clear day the light will not be good later on, but in overcast conditions ( ironically! ) the afternoon light will not be a problem.

Rooms 405 and ( presumably 505 ) above it overlook the ends of the platforms at Est but are not at a good angle for photography.


Notwithstanding the warnings on this forum about the quality of the area around Paris Nord, the area seems to be safe enough that I observed a number of local women ( of the respectable sort, I hasten to add! ) walking alone at night and the area was quiet.

Got my scanner working, so here is an example of the view from the hotel window mentioned in the above earlier post.

good to know that, its good to have an alternative in Perth.

in Perth I strongly recommend the Adam Guest House in Pitcullen Crescent.
I've been staying there for 23 years now and it is an excellent Guest House albeit a little way out of the city centre.

The Crown Hotel in Colne right next to the station is very nice with a very generous breakfast. and a real bar.

Here's my mini review from March, I think the room number was 1005. Attached is my poor camera phone picture of the view from my window.

Currently staying in Premier Inn at Stratford Westfield.
Have been given a room on the top floor with clear view of the Olympic Stadium & the sights of London.
Also can see Overground trains going to & from Hackney Wick, DLR into the International station & into the International station.
Not bad for £39

Just booked myself into the Darlington Travelodge on a Saturday night in mid-November. Has anyone else stayed here? Looks like it'll be a taxi ride from the station (I'm not arriving until 9pm) and then a bus back in the morning.

About one and a half miles from the station. The building is like an Eastern European block of flats, but has been refurbished and has received good reviews.

A few Iv used recently - Juries inn Glasgow - nice and near central, good standard city hotel, sadly lacking in customer care from restaurant team. Juries inn aberdeen, very new and vvv handy for union Square, trains and buses, v slow lifts for some reason. Visited someone staying in Premier Inn Glasgow Bucannon Galleries, which is new and totally the opposit on the lift front, it seamed very good!

On the other hand, avoid avoid avoid Romanos Hotel, Victoria, London, I didnt, it was grim!↲

Recently stayed at Leeds City North (Arena) Premier Inn. It's very spacious and nice, but its a bit of a trek uphill from the station.

The self-service checkin machine broke and room wasn't made up properly when we arrived, but we got free drinks from the bar whilst they fixed it.

We stayed in twelve different hotels during our All Line Rover last Summer, from the £29 Travelodge in Holyhead to the £250 Andaz Great Eastern Hotel at Liverpool Street.
Generally I would say we got what we paid for (Had to go to reception to get Toilet Roll in Holyhead) but there were some other suprises (good and bad) along the way:

Premier Inn Exeter St Davids- excellent evening meal and breakfast well above that expected
Thistle Brighton - overall a let down in terms of service and food
Royal Station Hotel Newcastle - Cramped room but at least it looked over the platforms, milk was off at breakfast and no-one cared.
Premier Inn Inverness Milburn - Despite the website stating "station ¼ mile"- the reason we booked it- it was a good mile away
Grand Central Hotel Glasgow - despite arriving mid afternoon our room was not ready for an hour and we missed a train we were taking for our afternoon trip.
Macdonald Manchester Piccadilly - Paid extra for a panoramic room and got a great view overlooking the viaduct to Oxford Road.

yes thats a good point Re the Inverness Milburn PI, its near enough quarter mile away if driving/taxi'ing but on foot i.e doing it safely avoiding main roads its further. That said iether Milburn Road or Huntly Street Inverness PI's are good shouts in inverness

Stayed at the relatively new Premier Inn in Croydon Sunday. It's in Lansdowne Road which is at the end of the path from the new entrance at East Croydon station.

Last night stayed in the Premier Inn next to Birmingham New Street. No railway views although I suspect some rooms mights have. Right outside the Stephenson Street exit.

Both up to the usual good PI standard and at £29 each.

Most of my hotels these days are for family stays so often not good for bashing as such. I did recently stay in the "Ibis Budget" in Salford Quays. For £19 quid I wasn't complaining, it's a bog standard design for Ibis Budget rooms, Very hard bed, small toilet / shower and TV. That's it but for 19 quid I wouldn't expect more. There is a decent eatery over the road, garage around the corner for snacks and a microwave and kettle in the foyer for all to use. It's dead opposite Salford Quays tram stop so useful for tram moves!

An exact replica is available outside Leuven station if you are into Belgium which I got for 19 Euros three nights running last year.

Well away from the station I can recommend the Holiday Inn in Plymouth, very impressed with a stay there over the last few days, but it is pricey and a mile from the station!

I recently stayed at the A&O Hotel / Hostel in Dresden. It's clean, basic, and cheaper than many other hotels in the city. It's a 7 minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof, just out of the centre. I had a top floor room, which overlooked the railway line, and mounted a camera on my window sill while I was out of the room, I have taken out all of the dead time, and here is around 90 minutes worth of trains in around 10 minutes.

A&O are pretty decent IME The Leipzig one is nice (and again next to the Hbf) but not in a position where you can see trains.

Here's a hotel review of mine for the Hotel Zur Post in Wernigerode, Germany. This is perfect for anyone wanting to visit the Brockenbahn, which is a part of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways, where you can travel up the Brocken, the tallest of Germany's Harz Mountains. Michael Portillo covered the journey from Halberstadt on one of his European Adventures (I think the first series), where he encountered a witch at the top of the mountain (there's plenty of them around there!).

Some quick reviews of a few hotels near stations.

Doubletree Victoria - (Executive room, top floor). Very modern room was very nicely appointed (including proper coffee), although not particularly large. View over platforms, small balcony but couldn't open the doors (and didn't ask for access). Other floors did not look quite so nice, possibly not refurbished yet. Bar closed oddly early, breakfast is a bit crowded and rushed service. Directly opposite side exit of station.

Hilton Euston (Standard room). Nice, traditional room, which was a good size, but overlooking the gym so no actual external window. Plenty of light, but I found the room a little warm and a/c didn't do enough for me! Older building, so a bit creaky. Really friendly service and great breakfast. 3 minute walk from station.

Hilton Paddington (Standard room). Rooms are a decent size, some of them are huge (was possibly given a deluxe room, but they didn't mention an upgrade). Interesting art-deco style, so obviously not very modern, but well appointed, including coffee maker, and particularly comfortable bed. Front desk staff were not particularly friendly. Accessible from inside station.

Holiday Inn Express Slough. It's a standard Holiday Inn Express, pretty basic but functional. Friendly (if somewhat busy) staff. Room also directly over tracks, so possibly some train noise. 1 minute walk from station, in the car park.

Liner Hotel, Liverpool. Nautical-themed hotel. Rooms are quite small and a little basic, although public areas are generally good. Some rooms overlooking platforms, so possible train noise (not well insulated). Staff can be a bit hit and miss, but generally helpful and friendly. 1-2 minutes walk from station.

Queens Hotel Leeds. Traditional, art-deco, and reasonably well-appointed rooms. More comfortable than I expected for a relatively cheap station hotel. Not particularly large room, but good bed. Not much view for me, but direct access to station.


I would be interested if anyone has any comments on the St Pancras Hotel or the Great Northern Hotel.

Recently stayed at Holiday Inn Express Birmingham Snow Hill. Very good location for any of the three major railway stations in the City Centre, plus the Tramway. Although it's on a major road you can't really hear anything because it's a tall towerblock. Fairly new - it only opened in Summer of last year. Breakfast included in the price although was better than a continental was still fairly basic. Very nice and comfortable inside - better than the normal Holiday Inn Express standard I would say. Difficult to find if you don't know where you're going; it's pretty much on St Chad's Circus.

The Geneva Youth Hostel was pretty nice Very Cheap by Geneva standards (~£25 per night) just a few mins from the lake shore and about 900m from the main station. Plus as with all Geneva hotels they give you a free public transport card valid on all public transport within the Greater Geneva zone of the Unireso network

In the Wetherspoons hotel in Shrewsbury, The Shrewsbury Hotel. Last night was fine noise-wise, small amount of rowdy Saturday night goings on but not too invasive. Fine tonight.
Good clean room, biscuits and bottled water supplied, plenty of towels, shower gel etc. Can bring food and drink up from the pub.

This is the third Wetherspoons Hotel I've stayed at (Salisbury and Newport are the others) and I have grudgingly enjoyed them. I don't like Wetherspoons pubs, but quite like their hotels.


Stayed at the Rennie Macintosh next to Glasgow Central recently. It's everything you can read about online - more than adequate for the price but no lift. I'll certainly give it another go. I opted for another hour in bed rather than the breakfast.

I recently stayed at the Britannia Hotel in Manchester for £35, booked through hotels.com a few minutes from Piccadilly station. Very good it was too.

And I've also booked the Comfort Inn in Station St, Birmingham (though hotels.com again) for around £40 per night. I'm going to an exhibition at the NEC and I find a hotel near New Street and a ten-minute ride to International way preferable to the overpriced hotels at or near the NEC itself.

In Liverpool I stay at the Formule 1, about ten minutes walk from Lime Street/Central station, which charges £26 per night in the week but more at weekends. It's clean and convenient but there are no ensuite rooms. There are a few hotels on Hanover St near Central station (one is called the Hanover) that might be worth investigating if the Formule 1 is too basic for your tastes.
