Accidental same station exit at Waterloo

Travelling a couple of days ago on Oyster PAYG, went into Waterloo Underground at the York Road entrance and followed signs for Waterloo and City Line. They took me through two gates and past a validator at the entrance to the W&C, on which I touched.

Looking at my journey history, I entered, exited and entered again and so have been charged a minimum fare for a same station exit. Did I take the wrong route through the station, or should I not have touched the validator?

(Capping meant that it only cost me 20p, but I'd like to know in case there's a next time)

I think that the W&C should be signposted as through Waterloo station itself from the York Road entrance - it's a lot quicker as well as avoiding problems like these!

That said, there's no reason why TfL couldn't set up the W&C validator at Waterloo to cancel a same-station exit through the main part of Waterloo LU station when touching in (you were correct to touch in at the W&C validator, otherwise you would have had a maximum cash fare at Bank, which would be in addition to your cap!)

The W&C is down the slope as you come round the corner by the entrence from the peak entrance to the platforms. You do not go through any barriers and just use one of the validators on the was round to the entrence slope.

Indeed - however it's signposted as accessible from the York Road (i.e. the one signposted as the South Bank) entrance - whereas on Oyster using that route leads to being overcharged as you have to go via the other lines.

Oh yes, I was thinking about Waterloo Road.

best thing to do is head for the newer Jubilee line entrance past M&S

If it's signposted through three lots of Oyster readers then that is something that TfL ought to address. If you can get between the first two in under two minutes and then use the third within a further 45 minutes then you won't be overcharged.
