It was certainly interesting when they were on Portsmouth to Cardiff runs with that written on the side! I quite liked it too though, and the shabby interiors! Wrecked but still cumfy!

I'd love to see a photo of it at one of the stations on the route.

There was 158777 (and possibly others) which had EMT stickers, over the basic Central branding, over the FTPE branding*, over the Northern spirit livery!

Goodness me, that got a bit out of hand!

For 'accidental', and a little bit out on a tangent, I remember seeing a photo of a Network Rail 'response vehicle' (van/small lorry). The door was open and the lettering position meant it appeared to say 'ponse vehicle'!

My favourite one, and i'm surprised to see it disliked is in fact the FTPE 158 with the purple stripe and northern spirit livery as a base.

Looked weird at first, but suited them when you got used to it.

The vinyl over the Northern Spirit colours worked, just about.

When they did the same thing over the Regional Railways colours, though...

I didn't like them because it meant the gold swoosh was partly covered by the vinyl, which made it look a bit weird. Burgundy, dark blue and gold probably could have worked as a colour scheme.

In a similar vein, when First Great Western took over former Wessex Trains operations, they rather quickly removed the Wessex Trains vinyls. But I remember seeing one train where they'd started pulling the vinyl off then presumably gone on a tea break, as half the vinyl was removed and the remainder just read "sex trains".

In a similar vein, when First Great Western took over former Wessex Trains operations, they rather quickly removed the Wessex Trains vinyls. But I remember seeing one train where they'd started pulling the vinyl off then presumably gone on a tea break, as half the vinyl was removed and the remainder just read "sex trains".

Not railway, but unfortunate positioning of trees on the approach obscures part of the 'above porch' sign on Cressex school (High Wycombe), with a similar outcome.

Yes, of course. However due to the nature of handing over a franchise on the rail network, the incumbent operator will understand that the new operator will have to use their old livery for a period of time whilst it is being updated to the new brand.
As for using the exact same livery and applying a new logo, this is also possible if both old and new owner agree to the arrangement, or more simply the old operator does not raise any issue over their colours continuing to be used.

Good question. Some of the East Coast commemorative vinyls are not being rebranded AFAICT; I recall seeing one in particular recently that looked very East Coast in style (it had that purple underline).

Those Northern Spirit / FTPE / CT / EMT mash up 158s were always an odd one to see. And then I have a photo (not mine) of an HST with the later Midland Mainline colour scheme on the power cars, and a mixture of ex VTXC & MML Mk.3s sandwiched in between. Then there was the mish-mash of loco stock used for a while on Blackpool & North Wales services. I remember ex-FGW green livery Mk.2 being used with a collection of different coloured 47s.

What is accidental?

The ScotRail post 1994 was low key but it "accidentally" looked good on the various RR liveried units.

And I am talking about the tiny logo on RR stock.

I did like the rebranded "ONE" stock with the white stripe.
