Accessing e-tickets

Hi All,

I normally like my CSST tickets but was out and about this week not knowing which train I would catch home and from a station with no TVM so I bought an e-ticket from the Northern App.

This then emailed me with the ticket attached as a .PDF. When I heard the conductor coming I tried to access it but the wi-fi wasn't working very well and we were in a 3G area. Luckily the ticket appeared just before the conductor did.

It got me thinking for future reference (and from reading some of the wallet threads), how do I access an e-ticket when there is no connectivity on the train? Apologies if this is obvious!

Open the ticket ahead of time and ensure it is downloaded, or add to Apple/Google Wallet and it works offline. If using a TOC app if you open it once it will download so you won’t need signal later.

CCST - Credit Card Sized Tickets

Store it locally on your phone somehow.

Take a screenshot of the barcode.

Apple or Google wallet are options too.

Indeed, the answer to the vast majority of non-tech people about buying from an app is this - pick one*, always use that one, and show the tickets in the app.

* I'm almost inclined to say "pick Trainline", as it has the most intuitive UI of any of them, and it doesn't charge fees for on the day purchase. Though the LNER one is getting pretty good these days.

As others have said, save the PDF to your device. No internet connection is required on the train.

You can optionally save it to another device, or print it, if you wish to have a backup.

You could use Google or Apple Wallet.

You don't make long journeys on XC then; these retailers charge a fortune compared to the forum's site!

If there is no option to add the ticket to Apple or Google Wallet save it to the files app on an iPhone or the equivalent on Android.

I indeed don't, no. I'd pay twice as much to avoid that overcrowded hell-TOC!

Most of my journeys are on the WCML where splits almost never produce walk-up savings (and even where they do, the lost flexibility or speed is often unacceptable to me), so I just tend to use the LNR app. I only tend to use the Forum site or Trainsplit if I want to pick a specific reserved seat.

I don't know whether I'm particularly technically incompetent but on Android I find it very difficult to find saved/downloaded files except pictures I took via the camera

If you download the files, they should go to your Downloads folder; can you access that?

It may be worth downloading a wallet app, then you'll always have them handy.

You should find the "Files by Google" app installed automatically, if not it's in the Play store. There you can find all the extra folders on the device!

All Android versions I have seen have a Download folder.

If you don't have a File Manager app you should get a free one from the Play store.

If you use the Adobe PDF reader it lists all recently opened PDFs on it's homepage so you can quickly retrieve them or switch between them.

I have a 5 year old Android phone - e-tickets go to the Download file which is accessed from the Tools icon.

Try going to Tools, then File Manager, then Download
