About that speeding ticket ....

Two British traffic patrol officers from North Berwick were involved
in an unusual incident, while checking for speeding motorists on the
A-1 Great North Road .

One of the officers (who are not named) used a hand-held radar device
to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill,
and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 300mph. The
machine then stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.

The radar had in fact latched on to a NATO Tornado fighter jet over
the North Sea , which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the
Border district.

Back at police headquarters the chief constable fired off a stiff
complaint to the RAF Liaison office.

Back came the reply in true laconic RAF style. 'Thank you for your
message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You
may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Tornado
had automatically locked on to your 'hostile radar equipment' and sent
a jamming signal back to it. Furthermore, the Sidewinder Air-to-ground
missiles aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also locked on to the
target. Fortunately the Dutch pilot flying the Tornado responded to
the missile status alert intelligently and was able to override the
automatic protection system before the missile was launched'.

Urban myth unfortunately

The true story happened nearly 10 years ago
Two officers from Dumfries and Galloway were speed checking on the A74 with a Speed Falcon handheld radar gun
They saw a Tornado and pointed it at it
The aircraft treated it as a SAM detection and so blocked it, which resulted in the Police officers equipment becoming locked
Even after trying to reset it the officers found they could not, so had to return back to Dumfries and explain what they had done
An engineer was sent from Lossiemouth a few days later and fixed the problem

Ever since then, the procedures for using this equipment have changed

Heard the one where a jet pilot got done for speeding as he was late, got in his aircraft called for an emergency landing and dumped all his fuel over the police officers who done him.

Fuel would evaporate rather than fall in liquid form. Unless the pilot was flying 50ft AGL.

Also it's usually only the big stuff that can dump fuel, long range heavies like the 747, 777 and 767. If a pilot of one of those tried something like that it would be the last time they ever flew, since not only is jet fuel very expensive (in the quantities that would have to be dumped to make an emergency landing), it's also very dangerous when dumped at low altitude aswell as a serious environmental hazard, not to mention the invonvienience caused by making an emergency landing and having to refuel again before continuing the flight. Basically, someone doing something like that would probably not only loose their job, and possibly worse, afterall covering people in highly flamable aviation fuel is not a joke, and in the right circumstances (e.g it igniting) would I'm sure be viewed as manslaughter at least. The fact that innocent bystanders might be caught up aswell, along with the risk to traffic, would also effect judement.
Basically, I think that story is just as unlikely as the first. Another think that makes both stories seem unlikely is that I've heard both a few times, and each time there is something different (e.g the first one I've seen is as both a Tornado and a Harrier, at different locations, with different quoted speeds etc etc, infact I've seen the same story relating to a USAF jet over America). Whilst minor variations of real life stories are common, big differences tend to suggest it's totally or largely fake.

Any one with an ounce of common sense will realise these are just cock and bull stories

We just wait for them to set up the van camera on the A27 where the M27 jct 11 slip road feeds in.
The camera van parks about 10ft beyond where we park to use an access gate, so we just pull up in front of the camera, totally blocking it's view of anything "Sorry mate, gotta do some work on the railway line, this is a marked acess point, didn't your boss tell you?"
