The railways, will never be abolished, as they are too important to the UK economy, and the road network couldn’t cope with the extra traffic, abolishing the railways, would put on it. the roads are already often gridlocked, prone to delays, and struggling with demand already, and with the move to greener transport etc, it would be political suicide to abolish the railways. I can see tough times ahead for the railways, as the government might well try to claw back money, in these hard times, after Covid, and the strike threat by RMT, will only harm the railways going forward, and likely causer more service cuts, than the government would have done with out the strikes.
I think the government, would be very short sighted, to cut services too much, just as the UK, is opening up after Covid, but I know the travel demands have changed after Covid, from peak time demands, to more leisure orientated travel, which the railways will need to adapt to, but I can see, the railways, getting back to pre covid levels, and exceeding them eventually, long as the DFT keeps cool head, and helps the railways, ride out these tough times.
There are other forms of transport of transport, like buses-coaches, or airplanes, but these aren’t up to taking over the role of the railways, as the road network, is no where near, reliable enough journey time wise etc, as often subject to delays and bad congestion, and flying, while in limited circumstances, is quicker and better, they are not possible for town to town etc, or short journeys, and by time got to airport and caught plane, they often offer little time savings over the train, unless one is going over long distances, so tough luck for the spectator, in my opinion the railways are here to satay, and probably out last the spectator.
