Aberdeen - Birmingham Saver Return

Well this month, I may be heading south at some point and my ticket will be a Aberdeen - Birmingham saver return although I would like a all-nighter at Carlisle chucked in too.

I know, Outward the ticket is only valid on that day, but return, is it allowed to say if I did a Birmingham - Carlisle, did a all nighter at Carlisle, then Carlisle - Aberdeen the next day?

AIUI, you can break a return journey on a Saver and complete it (reasonably) within the month it is valid for. ie, you can take a month in theory for a journey provided the dates on the ticket are valid.

You can go BHM-GLA/EDB-ABD no problem and, provided your ticket is valid for the days (which I imagine it will be) then you should be fine, Jord

My itinerary would be something like:

Southbound: Aberdeen - York/Peterborough - Birmingham.

Northbound: Birmingham - Carlisle - Newcastle/Edinburgh - Aberdeen.

Unless these an easement in place I can't see a Aberdeen-Birmingham saver being valid through Peterborough, Grantham would be the furthest south on the East Coast Mainline I think. Nor can I see it being valid between Carlisle and Newcastle on the return, unless there is an easement.

This is a polite reminder to use proper titles and not three letter codes, this will then avoid confusion with things like BNS (Looks like Birmingham New Street, but as me123 already pointed out, that is the code for Barnes!)

I'm checking the routeing guide: Allows to go through the following maps:

BG+ER, BP+BS+FC, BP+BS+GA, BP+BS+ZZ, BS+FC, BS+GA, BS+ZZ, CE+BS+FC, CE+BS+GA, CE+DG+ER, CE+ER, CS+MM+FC, CS+MM+GA, CS+MM+WG+FC, CS+MM+WG+GA.

Long list hock: in short, if you wanna go up the ECML

• Go to Grantham and up from there should be fine.
• PBO is not allowed I'm afraid Unsurprisingly, neither is PTB
• You can go to York via Sheffield (if there's a XC HST on that could be a good bet...)
• It's not showiing map HX at all which means CAR-NCL is out I'm afraid. Odd that one, though...

It seems you can go up the WC to EDB or GLC and up from there. Or up the East Coast provided you join a train between Grantham and York inclusive. This is my interpretation of the many maps offered, I am open to corrections if anyone can find any different.

But twice i've gone via Peterborough now where I had a stop of 3 hours for the Freight and no one has said nothing, but I think I will do the Edinburgh - Plymouth HST on a Friday anywhere, hoping for some Valenta thrash

As usual, there's a difference between what's said and what's done... I know Hamilton - Coatbridge tickets are not valid via Glasgow but I've never been questioned either, even when I buy on the train. I suppose you'd be able to cross Carlisle-Newcastle as well in practice; I do find it odd that that route isn't in the guide :?

To clarify, 3-letter codes should not be used in titles, but there is no rule against using them in posts but please ensure they are correct.

I don't see a problem using codes as they can be used on:
- NXEC's booking engine
- Live departure boards
- National Rail journey planner

and can easily be looked up if people are unsure what the code is.

Sorry, Yorkie, I do that one all the time :roll: PBO it is, isn't it. Editted to avoid further confusion.

I've double checked PBO for you Jord, and technically speaking it's not allowed. Map BP, however, does allow travel to PBO from BHM but not any onward connections from there. Presumably for intermediate stations counted as Birmingham routeing point. But map BP cannot be used in conjunction with map ER (ECML) or any other similar map. As you've said, though, you've used it many times before so I don't see why you can't continue to do so.

Similarly, I can see Northern conductors allowing you to use the Tyne Valley line to get an HST to Aberdeen no problem, even though it's not in the routeing guide.

You might find it is just as cheap to break the entire journey into smaller chunks
I did this when I was travelling Cumbernauld to Kettering
I bought :
Cumbernauld - Falkirk
Falkirk - Crewe
Crewe - Derby Return
Derby - Kettering Return
Crewe - Euston FC single
Euston - Glasgow FC single
Glasgow - Cumbernauld

That was the same price as
Glasgow - Crewe Return
Crewe - Kettering Return
Crewe - Euston Return

I therefore decided to go for the longer option!
