At the time there were lots of ideas about how Dutch policy might bleed through, but as it turned out the best we got were a few extra bike racks (Northern) and a few "MtoGo" shops (Merseyrail). Oh, and the "Cycle Hub" at Leeds station which didn't last all that long.

I think Duo tickets on Northern were an Abellio idea as well?

Merseyrail is basically already like NS anyway. Clockface timetabling, all walk-up pricing, basic and yellow. Wasn't much to change.
I love how accurate your description of NS is :D

But anyway, in the Netherlands NS claimed that the aim was to learn from operations abroad to improve operations in the Netherlands. I'm not sure how much of that has happened either

I am surprised that the German Abellio operations will be the only ones left after this. Abellio UK was about as big as NS reizigers (the division that operated trains in the netherlands) just before covid, whereas the German division was tiny. And then of course the German division went bankrupt over covid.

As I understand it, the main reason NS is leaving the UK is because of political pressure in the Netherlands - which is unfortunate.

Whereas in this country, the "complaint" was of foreign operators coming over here and taking "fat" profits back to their parent state companies :D

The irony of course being that running a UK TOC isn't generally very profitable, certainly not compared to commercial bus operations.

For NS, there were a few years where the profit of Abellio UK was slightly larger than that of NS group as a whole - a sizable profit in the UK, a loss in Germany and a tiny profit in the Netherlands - so while maybe not very profitable, more profitable than running the hoofdrailnetconcessie!
