Plans for a new station to serve a major rail scheme have been approved.

Two London councils, Bexley and Greenwich, have given the green light for a new Crossrail station at Abbey Wood in south London.

The new, two-level station will open in 2017 and will be built above two new dedicated Crossrail tracks and those used by North Kent services.

Work on the temporary station, which will be situated in the current station car park and open in autumn 2014, will get under way next month. Demolition of the existing station will begin once the temporary station opens.

From 2018, Crossrail will add up to 12 extra trains an hour, linking Abbey Wood with central London and beyond, cutting journey times and reducing congestion on existing services.

The journey from Abbey Wood to Canary Wharf in London's Docklands and to Bond Street in the West End will be around 20 minutes quicker and passengers travelling to Heathrow airport will be able to cut about 40 minutes off their journey.

for a moment I was confused by the description "two level station" and thought they were suggesting the crossrail and North kent lines were going to be superimposed.

Very good news and removes the 70s tangle of walkways next to the station, and hides the associated 70s flyover.

Bit of a shame the late 1980s station is going - I like it but obviously this is a big improvement. I'm impressed though that BR/Network South East managed to build a station that was interesting with the sharply sloping roof, airy, and decent quality in a time of limited funds.

I don't know the building of which you speak, but would the building in question be one that would be relatively easy to relocate to another station? Assuming that this relatively recent construction is not life-expired, of course.

I doubt it - it's a brick building. And it isn't that great - just a nice station that could've been a lot worse given funding contraints and some of the budget dross from the 70s.
