Hi, I saw this video on TikTok of an abandoned Virgin 390, the interior is still fairly intact apart from the 1st class lamps and seat covers have been removed

I’ve done some searching and surprisingly haven’t found anything on it.

Is anyone able to give any background info on it or a possible location?

Thanks

Part of 390 033 (2 vehicles) - at the fire service training college near Moreton in Marsh, so it's not abandoned - it's part of a training setup.

390033 rings a bell as the one involved in the Grayrigg derailment. Parts of it have ended up all over the place. I believe the rear driving cab is at Crewe?

Edit: And the actual answer is above!

Two vehicles at the Virgin (now Avanti, presumably) training centre in Crewe - the rear driving car, as you say, plus the vehicle with the shop.

Also one at a university (Cranfield?)

Don't believe the other 4 vehicles survive.

I remember seeing two vehicles under tarpaulins whilst on a work-related visit to Long Marston a decade or so ago. I seem to remember they were next seen in some urbex-type photos at Booths. Presumably the remaining two vehicles were scrapped as a direct consequence of the accident.

So I guess the two vehicles are scrapped then. What happen to the other 5 remaining vehicles of 390033?

I think there were some at Crewe at the Avanti training centre

Still there so far as I know.

See my post above.

Ok. So the 5 remaining vehicles of 390033 are still standing while the two are scrapped

Four unaccounted for (and presumably scrapped) - nine in total.

Ok. But I'm sorry to say this, it's very expensive for these vehicles to be repaired and as a result they are scrapped.

So far as I recall the train had been subjected to such forces that nobody was willing to guarantee that the welds between the extruded sections hadn't been weakened, and the insurance company decided to write it off.

Incidentally, last time I looked the two vehicles at Crewe were on the list for preservation.

Written off by the insurers, and a replacement set was provided in the additional build of vehicles to lengthen some set to 11-car and provide four new complete sets.

My ABC Rail Guide 2017 (first edition I could find on my shelf) says coaches 69133 and 69833 from 390033 have gone to a Virgin Trains (I assume now Avanti) training school in Crewe, and coaches 69933 and 69733 have gone to the fire training college in Moreton-in-Marsh. It doesn't list anything else about the coaches from that particular unit.

I hope this is of use/interest?

You are absolutely correct. The current designation list has the following:
Pendolino ‘Power Car’ and Coach at Virgin Training Academy, Crewe. Vehicles nos. 69133 (DMRFO – Driving Motor First Restaurant Open) and 69833 (PTSRMB – Pantograph Trailer Standard with Miniature Buffet) from set no. 390033 City of Glasgow, damaged in Greyrigg/Lambrigg accident in 23rd February 2007.
That should get the ol' easily offended going if they do actually get preserved.

If you look on google maps you can spot the two vehicles at the Avanti Training Academy.

I assume they were probably chosen as likely to remain in fairly close to original condition (and from photos do look to be in reasonably good condition without obvious damage from the derailment).

Preserving part of a Pendolino does seem justified, unlike some designations!

Not target practice, but for research use by the staff of Fort Halstead

Did that involve explosives?

Brilliant map picture you found. Is it still here? It's either that or it might be the old map footage.

So far as I know they are still there. The vehicle with the two at Moreton in Marsh is a Mk3 DVT. There are also various other bits of train there - including some or all of an EMU which I think might be a 508?

Those additional sets got past the updated legislation by claiming as a replacement for the written of set.

Something to do with four being the minimum viable order, as I recall - and they had to be identical, right down to the radio sockets between the seats even though that system had already been decommissioned on the active fleet.
