A48 Lydney closed due to unsafe rail crossing

Just coming through on Gloucestershire traffic reports the A48 level crossing at Lydney has been deemed unsafe and A48 major road has been closed.

Anyone know what is going on.

EDIT council are saying unsafe due to failing crossing plates.
Seems bit strange that a major road could be allowed to get to failing stage.

If they had anything like the biblical rainstorm we did on the other side of the Severn on Monday of last week, I could well imagine some sort of washout - not quite enough to be noticeable to the passing motorist and get reported immediately, but enough to fail the next inspection.

With further info, it seems it is rail crossing where Dean Forest Railway crosses the A48

And with many heritage railways, actually their interaction with public rights of way isn't as clear cut as on NR, it may be the Dean Forest Railways responsibility to maintain the crossing plates, but equally as likely it is the councils.

I'm rostered on the railway today so if I get the chance I'll try see what's up as we head through the area. It's our crossing near the site of the old St Marys bridge, between Lydney Town and Lydney Junction and it is fully automatic and not directly controlled by our signalling box at Lydney Junction.
