I would say the loan of a 170 would be much more likely. But this sounds pretty much impossible...

Is it April 1st? :P

Although I guess it has potential I suspect it is a complete wind up

Why would TPE need a Voyager?
Where would it be cleared for on TPE routes?
Who is going to sign it?
It would be a microfleet and a half (well, not even a half :P) for TPE as well

That said, I wouldn't mind seeing a Voyager on the Huddersfield Line!

I just read somewhere, dunno if anyone can confirm this or not, that Cross Country have loaned 220021 to TransPennine Express?

Surely someone is pulling my leg right?

I think you're aforementioned leg is now somewhat distant from the rest of you at this point.

Where did you read it?

I would have thought that *if* stock were to be lent by XC to TPE that it would be a 170, that TPE crews actually sign. Not sure the XC would really be able to spare any stock anyway though?

Well, I've had a gander on various 'Rail News' websites, & I can assure you there's no mention of AXC 'loaning' one of their Voyagers to TPE whatsoever. You've been had.

I have also looked on railnews.co.uk which is where I assume your Facebook friend got it from and likewise, there is nothing.

The closest we get on there is potential plans to extend the Voyager fleet with a pantograph coach and about the TPE strikes so maybe wires have been crossed somewhere.

Afraid to say I think it is a wind up

Where would it be cleared for on TPE routes?

  • Sheffield to Doncaster
  • Preston to Scotland
  • Any part of the ECML

Although, those are only small portions of their overall network I suppose...

Nothing in Rail News paper version. None of the TPE crews sign 220s, you've been had.

The only class XC could realisticly loan to TPE is a 170.

Yeah I realised after that there are quite a few bits that they can do but essentially none of them cover their core route, being the Manchester area, aside from the bit round Piccadilly I think.

Stranger things have happened before... I remember the scoffing people made 7/8years ago when the first rumours started emerging that Virgin were considering dragging Pendos to Holyhead... and then it happened! The East Coast 90 a few weeks ago? Look what happened there... Sure, the consensus are probably right on this occasion, but dismiss rumours at your peril :p life has a way of surprising you.

The Manchester-Scotland route they took over from Virgin used to be operated by Voyagers. Didn't come from the Airport though.

On this occasion yes, however I do recall on one occasion Virgin DID hire a class 221 to TPX to work a Manchester to Leeds? service as a last resort one evening. It was very much a one off and was a few years ago now (definately Virgin rather than Cross Country).

Oddly I do remember a Voyager going east through Stalybridge one evening many years ago in the early days of 22x. It didn't stop so I assumed it was just driver training or a positioning move. I was so gobsmacked I didn't think to look if there were any passengers.

Virgin used to use Manchester Victoria (and lines east by association) for diverted WCML/XC services.

In fact I have even managed to find the gen, ha. A class 221 worked the 2347 Leeds to Manchester Piccadilly on 03/09/2004 after a train crew shortage caused problems and road transport wasn't available, on hire from Virgin Trains to TPX with a Virgin crew.

Out of interest why is there an ECS move for the unit when it arrives at Newcastle and what does this entail?

Do they not terminate in the bay platforms at Newcastle and does this happen for all Newcastle terminators?

I believe it will arrive in one platform (ie the platform used by services to EDB etc) leave the station and return in a different one

Might shift platforms (run down the Forth Bridge branch) or roll round the bridges to free up platform space.

I did wonder if this was the case. However, I have checked Journey Planner on NRE for tomorrow (and next Tuesday!) and it has both the inward and outward services using P12 which is one of the bays.

Maybe the ECS is planned in case it cannot use a bay platform to enable it to be moved rather that block a through platform.

There is good reason why I said I thought it was a wind up rather than saying definitely that it was...these things have a habit otherwise of coming back to bite you!

Oooo, now I am intrigued. Any idea what route it took? Would be interested to see if it came on my local line or not. I guess they would have had a TPE driver on as a route conductor in which case?

The Leeds-Manchester empties used to be a regular booked move for Virgin XC Voyagers - I think they were enroute to Crofton Bombardier (Wakefield) then later to Leeds for a service the next day.

My mate worked it one evening, and gave me a lift on it up to Leeds, to pick up my 2117 Blackpool job.

He was at Leeds at the time but went to Man Picc just before Virgin ditched XC. He's infact a former RRNE man. (predecessor of TPE).
