If you board your booked train but find a more preferably seat to your reserved one, is it acceptable to remove the reservation card from your booked seat?

A colleague and I came back from Doncaster a few weeks back on an earlier train than our reservations were for (we had open tickets), I asked the conductor if he was able to advise control that our reservations wouldn't be needed, "No" was the answer.

"It's a national policy Sir. Exclusive use is charged at six times the undiscounted fare for the journey."

Buying a ticket does not even entitle you to a seat and even reserving 4 seats does not entitle you to use all the seats as if the train is full and standing the guard can come along and ask where the passengers are for the seats and then advise standing passengers to sit in them seats.

I travelled from Huddersfield to Leeds yesterday and no seat for me and a lot more even considering we had paid out fare.

Your not supposed to remove card tickets, I think it says on them somewhere about unauthorised removal...........fine.........blah.

Having said that, I occasionally do so.

That brings me to and interesting point; many of my travels take me on FTPE Anglo Scottish services, often when trains are expected/known to be busy the Guard and/or Customer Service Host will go along checking seats and removing spent and unclaimed reservations - are they doing this because they have to, or off their own back?

Yes, A hen do managed to fill up a whole mk3 with the aroma of stilton on one occasion, so much so that I was tempted to move (I do like stilton, but only when I'm eating it !).

It was quite amusing hearing them attempt to recite a poem about a pheasant plucker though
