A visit to Clapham Junction

I'm thinking of going to Clapham Junction for the day on Thursday. It always seems busy with spotters there. Can anyone tell me is it worth spending a day there? Does much freight pass through on an average day?

Also what are facilities around the station like for food etc. Any good pubs for a pie and a pint?

There's a pub right outside, can't say for sure which, but it belongs to a chain of pubs I believe ('Spoons, Yates's etc) and they're always good for a beer and a burger...

Reference to freight, there's a bit goes through there on the Windsor side of the station (Platforms 1 to 6).

There's also the odd aggregates and engineering train or two passing through on the far south side of the station.




You may need a sou'wester and matching hat and wellies on Thursday this week!

The spotters are there for the procession of units, not freight,
of which there is very little compared to other locations around
the capital.

(having said that, Thursday is currently the best day for freight at CJ)

I can recommend the Falcon, located about 20 seconds walk from the shopping centre end of CLJ, it does some good food plus real ales. However, would personally avoid between 5pm and 8pm on a weekday as it gets packed with commuters and gets a bit of a squeeze to get to the bathroom, never mind getting a seat or table.

A bit further afield is the Battersea Mess and Music Hall (google maps it) which does excellent beer and is a bit less packed during commuter hours. It's about 5-7mins walk from CLJ.

I can recommend "Jack's at the Junction" on Lavender Hill. The cafe there does great breakfasts (amongst other things), has table service, unlimited tea/coffee and is reasonably priced.

It's just past The Falcon, cross over the junction with Falcon Road and it's on the left.

Yea - recommend the Falcon, the food is excellent as are the beers (Yes I tend to visit quite often)

Also lots of typical station shops on the bridge which has some excellent views

I can echo both londiscape's suggestions - the sausage rolls at the Battersea Mess are particularly fine.

The other pub mentioned by stigy is, I think, a Pitcher and Piano - not entirely sure as I usually just walk past it on the way to the Falcon!

It's still there but I can't vouch for it as I've never been.
