Some more learnings from my trip:

13. The European Rail Timetable available in print or digital form via its website is very useful with excellent maps and hints. It really comes into its own if there are delays and a possible available alternative route. At Paris Est station, a fellow who was sitting in a small block of seats had a copy, same as mine. I should have but did not converse.

14. If choosing between Caledonian Sleeper and Night Riviera because you lack time to do both, choose the latter. The sleeping compartments are a better design. Sure you'll miss out on the lovely trip to Fort William but the excellent riding qualities of the NR coaches is something to savour.

15. Do something I didn't if you're changing London terminals: look up TfL stations you'll be using to ascertain if they're step free. It wasn't a high point lugging my suitcase up numerous steps.

16. With rail replacement coaches, add time and then some as these often run later than what the rail operator says. The lack of coordination with trains at 'the other end' was a low point.
