I'll be doing a trip to Inverness early next month, hae just booked tickets and a hotel. Having never been before, I'd like to go for a meal and a few pints somewhere nice. Had a quick check through my Good Beer Guide and a look on the net, but wondering if anyone has any reccommendations. If it helps I arrive around 4-5pm on a Wednesday.

There's plenty of pubs, cafe's and restaurants in this small city.
Hootenany's on Church Street has 2 bars/music venues and a thai restaurant.
There's a decent one just 2 doors to the right as you come out of the station.
Bridge Street has a large "cheap and cheerful" Italian restaurant and there's 2 smarter Italian's just over the Bridge.
My favourite cafe by far is/was Church Street called something like "The Old Town Deli" but they were closing down in the autumn and relocating somewhere near the bus station (which is 2 blocks east of the rail station).
All the best places are right in the centre and mainly on the east side of the river.

Could have stayed there, but some of the reviews on Late Rooms weren't very good. Probably will pop in for a pint, since it's cheap enough.

And the food is cheap as well, :)

Aye, probably start there and have some grub and a couple of pints and have a walk around. Hopefully they should have some local real ales too, along with the Greene King and Pedigree.

That's probably what I would do, as to ales I think there's always a decent range in any of their pubs, well there always is in the Drapers Arms in Peterborough.

May I reminisce? Back in the early 80's, i was on a bashing tour from Wolverhampton to Wolverhampton via Inverness. We arrived there at about 6pm on Sunday. Now anyone who knows the Highlands will know that isn't exactly the best time to find anything open. We had about 20 minutes, and some mad passengers decided to try to find some food. One group were running around in headless chicken state, and asked my group if we had seen any food shops open. "No, but there's a sign down there that says currys" - chicken group runs off - and misses the train.
[Later on, we arrived in Perth at about 1am. Not due to stop, but stood waiting a path in centre road. Two messages spread through the train: "Do not get off, as we could start at any time"; "Just behind that wall there are usually a couple of dozen 26/27s stabled at this time". Inevitably, several gricers ask their mates to "hold the train", and jump down, leaving coats, bags and wallets behind. Equally inevitably, train starts just as they vanish behind wall. Never did learn how they got back.]
