I'm looking to travel from London to Leicester to stay with my sister next weekend, starting out on Sat 24th May and returning on Mon 26th. However, we'd like to visit Oakham (for Rutland Water) on the Saturday, so my sister suggested this itinerary for me:

- Travel from London to Oakham and meet her there on Saturday
- Go to Leicester from Oakham on the Saturday evening and remain there
- Go back to London from Leicester on the Monday

Is there a ticket or combination that will help me out price-wise, or will I have to pay for a single London-Oakham, single Oakham-Leicester and single Leicester-London? No railcard discounts apply.

London Terminals - Oakham Super Off-Peak Return will suffice, at £59.50

If you can travel out via Peterborough, then a Via Peterborough Super Off-Peak Return at £53.50 plus a change of route excess to the Any Permitted fare on the return leg only (£3) will work.

If you had asked yesterday, you could have done this trip for under £10. Unfortunately the loophole has now been closed.

Was that because of the new Routeing Guide changes? What was the loophole, just out of interest?

Anyway, to confirm (for your first suggestion), I'd travel to Oakham, then use part of my return to get to Leicester and break my journey there, and use the remaining part of my return on Monday to get back to London. Sounds easy enough; to be honest I probably should've thought of that myself :)

It was an error in the new fares round - so nothing to do with the Routeing Guide, with one of the fares between certain places in Yorkshire and certain places in Kent missing a digit.

Yes.

Oakham to London Group is permitted via either the ECML or MML.

Great; shame I missed out on that loophole (what timing, eh?), but thanks for your help!
