This is my first post on the site, however over the past two months I've been reading posts in this section on an hourly basis.
A couple of months ago I bored a train without a ticket but with the intention of purchasing one on the train itself (as an infrequent rail traveller I though this was ok to do, however I now understand that this is an offence) - a ticket inspector did not appear on the train. When I arrived at my destination station I purchased a ticket, but in a moment of madness I made a snap decision I've never made before and can assure you I will never make again - I chose to lie about the station I had boarded and instead named another that was closer. I was pulled up by the inspector where I confessed and details were taken.
The next day I started to investigate the consequences of this decision using this forum - it soon came to light just how serious these could be. The next two months have been filled with regret, worry, and shame for the decision I made that day. However, the contributors on this forum have provided extremely helpful information to someone who has no experience in this matter. I was quickly able to establish the facts on what the punishment could be, I was able to read into other contributors scenarios that were similar to mine and I was also able to obtain advice on how best to respond to the TOCs - I wasn't looking for a way out as I was more than prepared to face whatever punishment was dealt to me, but I wanted to ensure I knew all the facts before responding.
I always said that whatever the outcome I would take the time to join the forum and send a thank you to the people that provide advice on this site, I think the information you provide is invaluable and has been a source of comfort to myself and my family over the past two months.
Today I received a letter offering a settlement to keep the case out of court which I have immediately paid.
I certainly have learned my lesson and will not be making the same mistake again.
