The nearest milage marker to the Thornton circle is 16 1/4 which is much further down the platform.
I'm not sure about Kirkham's nearest milage marker. I believe its 6 miles but there's no marker along the platforms.

Possible, both stations have small (Dykes or steams?) right along side them (Kirkham's is at the far end of the woods on the down platform). But given that both of these are a good 20 ft separating them in height and to my knowledge never flood, I doubt it.
Thanks though!
I'm now pretty sure it must be a measurement or marker. I'd be very surprised if it turns out to be a logo or the remains of a sign - it's certainly not where I'd expect a sign to be placed for any commercial identification purposes.
If all of these properties have water, that could be it. Is it a symbol for a water overflow pipe of some sort? I was going to say that it could be for a gas main, but I can't see how that makes sense.
Utilities contractors often use paint to mark symbols denoting infrastructure beneath roads and pavements. Maybe this is similar, but since the infrastructure was beneath a wall or another structure, they couldn't paint a symbol on the ground. If you had used a template, I wouldn't bat an eyelid if you said it was aerosol paint - it looks like it.
You could phone or email your local utilities companies. They'll have all sorts of things on record.
