A Steamless Orient Express!

The VSOE to Bristol came through Staines today diesel hauled! It's ALWAYS hauled by Clan Line. What happened to 35208?

Clan Line suffered a failure a while ago now which meant that the fire had to be dropped near Wokingham. I gather there was something wrong with the water getting to the boiler, which led to the fusible plugs dropping. The crew then dropped the fire to prevent damage to the boiler and firebox. It was seen earlier in the day with all 3 safety valves lifting.

Also the Orient Express (British Pullman) is quite often class 67 hauled with only a few being Clan Line.

Thanks for the detailed explanation of poor old Clan Line's demise. When I said 'always' I meant the monthly VSOE day out trips.
Today we had Princess Elizabeth on yet another trip to Bristol-she had no trouble at all pulling away over the river.

Why,do they normally have trouble doing that?

I have seen a 67 on the VSOE at Bristol in the past. With non other than Geoff Ewans (Former Bristol Preservation era steam driver) at the controls!

If you're on about Staines IIRC it's on a set of quite tight reverse curves, so even when I've had the delights of travelling on a 458 it slips and squeals at times, they have all of the electronic gizmos to keep them from slipping too much; A steam loco doesn't have that luxury and it is down to the skill of the driver to keep it from slipping.

Ahh sorry,i thought we were on about the bridge at Bristol! Was going to say i havent really noticed them struggling there..... Never really taken any notice of Staines,usually avoid that part of the journey.

Same as me! Always been a Class 67 every time I've seen it too.

I used to work at Chilham (Kent) adjacent to the station and line. Pre-Tornado days working seemed to be 67 hauled in winter, with steam only dring the summer months.

Used to come through at about 13.20 hrs. Can't remember if it was daily or on a specific day of the week!

Everytime I've seen it, it's been a 67.

They've used 67s on it when they've run trains up to Cheshire from London for the RHS show at Tatton Park.
