I now declere reading is a sprinter free zone but it never used to be. It would be nice to see a sprinter once in a while. Does anyone know if there is any to come?

165s/166s are diesel Networkers
168s are Clubmans(/1s and /2s are closely related to Turbostars)
Everything else is further afield from Reading...

When was the last "Sprinter" service via Reading?

I recall getting a Virgin 158 regularly from Oxford to Reading late 90s early 00s. On the odd occasion it would get clearance to go down the "fasts" between Didcot & Reading - always a speedy, comfortable and pleasant trip.

The SWT services from Reading to Brighton were usually 158s, in fact I think they all were once the 170s left for pastures new. They ended in December 2007, so then presumably.

Were any 158s actually painted in to Virgin livery? Did they even receive Virgin branding?!

As far as I recall, they were in BR Regional livery, but they did have Virgin uniformed staff and trolley service on board. The 1st class bit had more comfortable seating than was the norm - I think it was 2+1 too. At least 1 unit transferred to the Transpennine route after the Voyagers were introduced, and I had a couple of trips on it then.
