A FARE dodger from Derby who tried to get away without paying £7.20 for a train journey has been hit in the pocket for more than £570.
Bary Kiper was convicted in his absence at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court of travelling on the train between Nottingham and Derby on January 19 and not buying a valid ticket.
Magistrates fined the 34-year-old, of Leacroft Road, £400.
They also ordered that he pay £125 prosecution costs, a £40 victim surcharge and £7.20 compensation to East Midlands trains for the ticket he failed to buy.

Naming and shaming fare dodgers, similar to ATW's "Mug" posters is probably a good way to telling fare dodgers that it isn't worth dodging the fare, especially between two barrier stations

......and had that offence been detected after 13th April this year the same offender would be ordered to pay a total of £720

Its amazing how many people I hear or see on other web forums (non railway forums) giving the advice to just ignore the letters as they think the train companies won't chase them up.

The same advice with other fines etc, all of a sudden the bailiffs are at the doors and they panic.

You get proper advice here, whether they take it that is another matter

But with virtually every other form of alleged debt this *is* good advice.

A friend recently had £7k of unsecured debt time out, due to ignoring letters etc.
