Just a quickie here guys.

Does anyone know where exactly Network South East were based? If anyone has access to the enitre address, great; if not, the area they were based would be more than enough. I assume it was somewhere in Central London?

TIA

Always thought they were based in the old Southern Region offices at Waterloo

That is correct; I just looked at a letter dated 1986 from Chris green's office and it had the Waterloo address on it.

One of the subjects of this letter is of interest...... it states that before the 508s were transferred to Liverpool, consideration was given to using the 43 spare trailers to strengthen some of the 313s; the plan was not progressed because of needing extra equipment, such as an additional air compressor, and there was insufficient room to install this - it would also have caused power supply capacity problems.

So the 455/7s were in fact very much the Plan B and never the original intention after all...

Network House, 1 Eversholt St. Not sure when they moved there.

In 1986 Chris Green was still based at Waterloo, as he was (briefly) GM of Southern Region and Director NSE at the same time.

There was a fairly small HQ office at Euston - most of the action was decentralized to the routes or divisions - e.g Hardwick House on the parcels deck at Euston for what is now LM / FCC , Liverpool St (Hamilton House - now demolished as land values rose with Broadgate for the Great Eastern) , Reading for Thames , Southend for LT&S and so on.

Even after the 455/7s were formed, there was a story written in a Network South East themed supplement to Rail magazine regarding the possibility of moving the ex-508 trailers elsewhere and putting new build Mk3 derived carriages in the 455s with toilets and first class to run the Reading line etc.

And how much better would SWT/SN/SE be if we all had Class 471s? Just imagine the compatability it would have given us.
