TBH, I think it has run its course as well because The Hate Squad are in town

 Where has anyone in this thread been anything other than pleasant towards you, and have explained why the guard needs to see the reservation?

You really do not help yourself sometimes.

IPT - yes, the Guard was right to ask for the reservation coupon, in the end that forms part of your ticket and you are required to show it on request. I'm presuming that you were on your booked services and completely valid so there should be no problem!

Is there a reason you seem reluctant to show the guard the reservation or was it just curiosity about whether you needed to or not?

Is it possible that this thread also give a clue as to the validity of an "&connections" ticket on a service that could in itself be reservable?
I don't think so.

Guards on either non-reservable trains, or trains for which the journey is not the majority leg (e.g. a Sheffield to Newcastle ticket being used between Sheffield and Doncaster) are, in my experience, rather unlikely to ask to see the coupon(s), indeed for me personally it never happens. However they can do so if they wish.

I see no evidence of any hatred toward you. If you reasonably believe that a post is inappropriate please use the report button

When somebody told me that reporting posts was:

wasting his time

Is there a reason you seem reluctant to show the guard the reservation or was it just curiosity about whether you needed to or not?

I was reluctant because the reservation coupon because I felt it had nothing to do with his service. The coupon only has my seat reservation for the 1018 out of Derby to Chesterfield and the other coupon had 1339 out of Chesterfield to Derby

Therefore, I felt that it had nothing to do with that service

Surely if that 'wasting his time' quote was something Yorkie has said it would be 'wasting my time'?

It is extremely rare that a reported post might be considered "wasting" our time, but if you have any feedback regarding that please use appropriate channels and not this thread.

As I said if you reasonably believe someone has demonstrated 'hatred' toward you, report the post. I have read through the posts on this thread and cannot find any posts that could reasonably be considered showing hatred toward you. However maybe there is something I have missed, in which case we will look into it...

How on Earth can so much be made out of so little?

IPT - to be pleasant, non-hatey, and summarise : You have to show all parts of your Advance ticket when asked. No more needs to be discussed.

It would appear that:

Hate = Not liking the answers given by others.

Hang on, is this Gnang Up on IPT Because He Has Just Come Back From A Ban Day or something? Did I miss something? Did you have a parade for it? What have I missed here?

Okay, let's clear this all up right now and as some of you will know, yes, I have been gone for a few days because I was banned! I won't go into detail because of the ban but some people know my opinion of the ban that was handed to me. That is not the point here.

I am trying very hard, VERY.....HARD to try and keep my cool here and I am trying so much you wouldn't believe it but when you instantly have people wanting to incite something, when you have people really out to get you and you have people contradicting what they said to you in private, it is really hard to do

So please, you all get on with what you are doing and allow me to get on with what I am doing on the forum. Some of you who have met me already know that I am a nice person and I will take jokes, Jordy will be proof to that as will a couple of other users on here

So please, just leave me alone and let me get on with posting!

Ok IPT - believe me, I don't want to 'gang up on you' - chill out fella! You asked a question which I believe many of us have been happy to answer - what more does anybody need to say?

You wish to be left alone to get on with posting?

Unless I'm very much mistaken, this is a forum. Not a blog.

IPT, you asked a perfectly intelligent question and got good and accurate responses.

You must show the coupon because:

1. Your ticket is only valid with the coupon
2. The guard has a right to ask you to show it
3. The guard has no idea that the coupon, which he can't see if you're withholding it from him, isn't for his train. Your coupon for all he knows is for an earlier or later XC service. So he may well ask to see it.

Nobody was rude here until you jumped in accusing people of being the Hate Squad. Chill out!

Not really sure what you're getting at - hairyhandedfool, ralphchardkirk and yorkie have all answered your question - you did have to show your reservation to the XC guard because the ticket is valid only with the reservation. Without seeing it, the guard doesn't know which service the reservation is for, and even if it's not for their train, needs to check that you're on a train which can connect with your reserved service.

Wouldnt the actual ticket have said 'EMT and connections'? In which case it is obvious which train the reservation coupon would have been for.

IPT, as has been mentioned, the ticket was only valid with the coupon. Thats why the guard asked for it. Everybody has told you this, and so answered your question, yet you seem to think they havent.
I have stuck up for you in the past, but this time you have acted in a very nasty manner yourself. The way you went for Yorkie was unnecessary. He answered your question perfectly clearly, yet you claim he has gone off on a tangent. He hasnt. His post was as clear as day.
On this occasion Ian, I would suggest you owe a lot of people responding here a big apology.

The only Advance fares between Rugeley Town and Chesterfield are XC & Connections.

Is there a way to know, when booking ''& Connections'' tickets which legs of your journey are reserved? I have booked such tickets and only been reserved on one leg, even when both legs are technically reservable. I'm going to Scotland at the end of the month and got 2 coupons, for EC and Scotrail.

You should actually be given reservations for all legs that are reservable (even if you don't have to use them), but on a 'rte XC & connections' ticket, I would expect the XC train to have a reservation above all others.

However, when I tried to see what would be issued for this ticket on Fastis, the XC service (to Nottingham) was listed as non-reservable (presumably a Turbostar service). In this instance the only reservable service appears to be the EMT service.

So we are left with a situation where the only service that must be used is not reservable. The guard presumably then has to see which service the passenger is reserved on at another point in the journey to determine if the passenger is on their booked XC service or not. Very strange situation.

I suspect this is an unseen or ignored error caused by the old franchises, when the Cardiff-Nottingham service was a Central Trains service.

Interesting thread here, to answer the OP again, the guard has a right to ask to see the reservation with an advance ticket.

Two possible scenarios may account for why the Guard asked to see the OP's reservation:

1. Even if there is not reservation for that specific part of the journey, he has a right to see the reservation foe the next part, as the ticket would only be valid on his train if the time is reasonable in relation to the other trains forming the journey.

2. The OP got up the guards nose with his attitude, and the guard was proving that his ability to mess the OP about was greater than the OP's ability to mess the guard about.

(Although I would go for scenario 1 personally ;))

I've just looked at my Southport to Hereford AP ticket for tomorrow and it doesn't say "&connections", but does say "Booked train only". However I know I can get whichever Merseyrail train I wish for the first (unreserved) part of the journey (provided it gets in before the timed train departs, and that I don't intend to leave any station en route). I am only obliged to take the stated ATW train from Chester to Hereford.

There is an alternative route from Southport to Hereford, via Manchester, on NR and ATW. If I was on a NR train out of Southport and showed the inspector a reservation that said it was valid from Chester, he would know I was not on the booked service, and could tell me to get off or issue me with some sort of penalty, which is fair enough as it would not be the journey I had paid for. I would have no objection to showing whatever tickets he wished to see, unless I was trying to dodge around the system somehow.

If it is valid via Manchester and Altrincham, then there are unreservable Manchester-Chester services you could use, so as long as you could reach Chester in time I don't see why you couldn't use a Northern service to Manchester.

Really??? I've always assumed that because the booking engine gives just the Merseyrail connections, that is what I have to use. I prefer MRail anyway as those NR Pacers are so uncomfortable (although they do have the advantage of onboard loos!), but if the timings suited better on any occasion it's interesting to know I'd be allowed to use NR. I think the Southport to Chester direct service via Manchester takes about three hours though! :|

How would I know if my AP ticket would be valid via Manchester and Altrincham?

Without opening up yet another can of worms, my advice is that if you wish to do that journey then when you book, specify via Altrincham or Stockport in the booking engine. Different booking engines (ie, WebTIS, Thetrainline, etc) may have different interpretations. If you can get an itinerary via Altrincham, then print it off. If the guard asks to see it, or queries the ticket, you can show your itinerary. If you cannot book a ticket with such an itinerary then my advice would be to not travel that way.

What's the route on the ticket?

AP SHREWSBURY, which only applies to the booked leg of the journey. So can I assume from this that going to Chester via Manchester would be acceptable if I so desired?

It's not likely to happen, given Merseyrail's 15 minute service as against NR's hourly one, but I'm curious now. Actually it might be useful in the event of emergency bus replacements or similar on MRail.

I can only repeat my advice above. However I have tried it myself, and it did give me such trains, in fact if you specify via Stockport it will route you via Wilmslow. However if you specify via Altrincham it will put you on the tram (which, despite looking like it is included in the price, apparently isn't). I looked at a random date in late May on the East Coast site (which uses WebTIS).
