The class 484/0 is a 2 car unit with no front gangway. when coupled the trains are too long to fit in most platforms. I had a thought for 2 new subclasses

484/0 No front gangway and 2 car formation
484/1 Front Gangway and 2 car formation
484/2 No front gangway but 3 car unit

I think 3 car versions Like the 230 but electric would suit SWR better as the fact 3 car would fit in every platform where as a 4 car unit would not. and with my proposed 484/1 it could couple with the ability to walk from unit 1 to unit 2

I admit the idea is a bit odd. But it might be a good thought

Are there any centre carriages remaining in the stockpile that GWR bought from Vivarail's receivers, or are there only DMs remaining?

No clue.

I do agree it would be an odd one but for the gangway wouldn't it make more sence?

What a waste of time, to be honest. Island Line has five 2-car units/10 vehicles for two trains in service. That gives the option of running as either two or four car formations.

I thought all the platforms were already 4 car capable, else why would SWR mention their ability to run 4 car services at busy periods?

Its also more the fact that when the pier is closed you cant send a 4 car all the way into the platform some safety thing

From what I'm aware lake is not, and I'm not too sure that Smallbrook JCT is either.

to this i understand but it might help to have a 3 car to help with units running as 4 car in summer

That is still not making any sense. The most that will run are two trains at a time, each maximum 4-car. Island Line already have the stock to do that and 3-car sets would just massively complicate things.

I don’t see what problem your idea would solve.

They all were/are, unless the recent works have changed something.
I think the overlays to increase the platform height were not necessarily covering the maximum length at the longest platforms, but they were all still going to be at least suitable for the four car D78 length of 72m, even at Lake.
