A new computer problem.

Rather annoyingly, when I am typing out correspondence, any new sentence that commences with the capital letter "P" causes the "print drop-down box" to appear and the capital letter not appear and everything comes to a dead stop until I cause the offending drop-down box to be cleared.

I am using Microsoft Edge on my large memory capacity HP Pavilion desktop computer. I am 80 years of age and would welcome any advice why this is happening.

Not so, I only have to type the capital letter "P" at the start of a new sentence and the problem then occurs.

Not sure then... What software (ie - App) are you using to type your correspondence or did you mean you're using an online text editor accessed via Edge itself? Whatever the case (assuming the keyboard is properly functional) there might be something within the settings menu that could be reset.

I believe it's some sort of sticky command that has inadvertently been activated. From memory either pressing CTRL twice in succession or holding down both CTRL keys used to release it.

I will try that the next time that I have correspondence to compose, which fortunately is becoming lesser by the year.

Its begun to happen again, after a four-month error-free period, but this time, occasionally when a letter "p" is in the middle of a word..

Occasionally suggests to me a keyboard problem, in my working days I would have swapped out the keyboard and cable as a starting point but this is not realistic.
you could try unplugging and reseating the cable, or giving the keyboard a smart rap on the desk

looking at hp desktops it may be a wireless keyboard so that’s another problem, I’m showing my age here but still think the keyboard is a likely suspect

I would agree that keyboard may be the issue. Although it doesn’t explain why it doesn’t do it with other keyboard shortcuts

It’s not unknown for me to try and fix these issues by, with the pc off or keyboard disconnected, pressing over all the keys on the keyboard to make sure nothing is stuck down at all

Another problem has now arisen. Occasionally, when I type the name of a settlement beginning with a capital latter such as Dumfries, what appears is an extra capital letter at the start which then might say BDumfries. Whenever this occurs, those first two capital letters are nowhere near to each other on my keyboard.

Sounds like a 'key rollover' problem. Normally these problems would be a feature from day 1 of owning the keyboard as it would be down to the keyboard design, but as this has developed over time, either a hardware problem perhaps with some small amount of residue joining different parts of a circuit together, or a driver which has somehow ended up corrupted or lacking in updates or something.

There's various Windows features like 'sticky keys' which might cause some problems, but none which would cause e.g. Dumfries -> BDumfries that I can think of.

Try a different keyboard if you have one; or try that same keyboard in another computer. I suspect it'll be a case of going keyboard shopping unless you can find some dirt hidden under the keys and clean it out!

My eldest twin son has just called and taken away the "problem" Microsoft keyboard that worked off my HP Pavilon tower system of my desktop computer and replaced it with a good quality HP keyboard. He has run a program to check if there were any system problems and all is now clear on both fronts.
