Hi All,

I am a new commuter and is about to get a Season Ticket from Vauxhall to Egham.

I checked on the national rail official site and here is the result:

I am looking at monthly price. I am wondering if the price of 213.60 is a point to point or does it allow me to travel in between zone 2-6?

The interesting thing is, when i did a season ticket search the other way round (i.e. From Egham To Vauxhall). I got more options!

Obviously, the 216.60 option allow me to have unlimited travel in zone 2-6 with nationalrail, underground, buses and Tramlink. (correct me if i am wrong)

This made me think that the 213.60 option is just a simple point to point season ticket and not I will not be allowed to use that ticket to travel using underground/buses within zone zone 2-6. Is that correct?

I then check the South West Trains website and this confused me further. The 216.60 option is Egham - Zone R2356 Zones? Where is Zone 4 then???

Also, which option should i go for? What would i miss if i choose to buy season ticket of Egham => Vauxhall instead of Vauxhall => Egham?

That's correct. The Travelcard options are only shown for journeys from outside London to the within it (though you can of course use it starting from within London). Pretty good value for the extra £3!

You have to travel between Z3 and Z5 by Tardis or catapult. Or maybe there's not room on the ticket to print Z23456 so they miss out 4 (same as an All Zones Travelcard which is "Z1256")

I'd go for the Z2-6 Travelcard unless you absolutely never travel within London! (Remember also that it would be valid on buses within Z1, since any travelcard is accepted on buses). There's no difference between the direction, a Season Ticket is valid for unlimited journeys anywhere between your two stations, by any valid route and in either direction.

OK, I've had a look myself and it seems that the £213.60 point-to-point is valid to Waterloo as well (for reference, Egham to Z1-6 is £275.80). Vauxhall counts as a "London Terminal" so this is the price given - so I'd still say the 2-6 Travelcard is best unless you want to go to Waterloo a lot :)

Also bear in mind that you can buy a ticket for anything from 1 month to 1 year - so it's best to plan ahead so you're not paying for a ticket whilst on holiday/weekends etc (though I imagine you would use the Travelcard at weekends anyway).

That's right. R2356 is effectively Zone 2-6 as there is no way to get from Zone 3 to Zone 5 without going through Zone 4, same as the fact that R1256 is used for Zone 1-6.

As mentioned in a couple of threads in the last few days, don't simply buy a literal one month ticket; buy a ticket to last you for 5 weeks (I am assuming you work Mondays-Fridays) and ensure you plan ahead and buy in 'blocks' taking into account annual leave, bank holidays etc. :)

And just to fully clarify, Zone R2356, R1245, R1256, etc. etc. all include the "missing" zones. They were originally truncated on TFL-issued tickets for space reasons and the concept stuck.
