Not a bad fare, £99 for all three days or just an extra £26 first class. These multi-day outings seem to be coming common!

The Friday move looks a good one to me. Can easily get to Preston on the first train from Bradford, and an afternoon trip back from London will not cause to much aggro from the wife WRT late arrivals

You could even come back on the Pretendolino (assuming it is still running then)!

Another move which could be a lot of fun would be to take the WSMR 16:30 off Marylebone to Shrewsbury (£18 booked in advance), then home from Shrewsbury with ATW (£12 advance Shrewsbury > Huddersfield and £3.60 single Hudds > home). At £33.60 this is £3.80 cheaper than the best advance fare I can get on EC on a Friday afternoon, and loads more miles behind much more rateable traction (as units go, I even quite like 175s TBH).

Only problem is that it's only a 20 minute connection at Shrewsbury. Earlier in the day this would be fine, but if the 16:30 is late into Shrewsbury by this much then it's a move to oblivion. Does anyone know how reliable WSMR is? Would YOU risk this for 165 or so miles of skip haulage?

Even better, I've just found a £14 advance on that train from Marylebone > Shrewsbury if I push it to the max time wise. If I'm on line, credit card in hand, exactly 12 weeks before the tour I should be able to get from London to Shipley via Shrewsbury for a mere £29.60!

Yes, but that wasn't a move to oblivion. And if you'd met my wife you'd realise exactly what 'oblivion' meant if I were to try to explain that I'd had to buy an open single from Shrewsbury to Leeds 'cos I'd missed my advance, and then a £25 taxi from Leeds to home. She's what English people euphemistically call a 'feisty Irishwoman'.

It's a plus 19 now in the new timetable, so it just got 5% worse

I'd have to agree as well! And the idea of people bringing up coming back on Wrexham & Shropshire is an equally as good idea!

Have decided against the skip in the end. Managed to get an EC advance fare on the 16:35 off the Cross for £20.05 instead. This gets me home at 19:22 instead of 23:10, which will buy a lot of spousal goodwill for the ambitious programme I've got next year. If it were later in the year I might have opted for the skip, but as it is on March 4th it'll be dark before Leamington so that's a lot of riding around looking at bugger all. Pretty much like riding on an Electra through Lincolnshire in daylight now I come to think of it!
