A London Question

hi all

Im planning a trip to London but i am sick of 350`s 390`s and the chiltern units so i fancy a change

if i buy a ticket that states "Any Permitted" under route can i get on a train to say Oxford or Nottingham and change there to a HST to London?

Via Oxford. - Yes, you would end up going through Reading anyway.

Via Nottingham. - Yes and no. You can't go from Birmingham to Nottingham to St Pancras, But you can go Birmingham-Tamworth-Derby-Nottingham-Leicester-Nuneaton-Coventry-Leamington Spa and then either to Marylebone or on to Oxford-Paddington (map CS). You could also leave Nottingham out and go from Derby to Leicester.

You can get an Off-Peak return (£40.40) provided you use trains that arrive in Marylebone at or after 1100hrs, Paddington at or after 1039hrs, St Pancras at or after 1006 or Euston at or after 1055 (evening restrictions also apply)

How about catching a Voyager to Basingstoke then a SWT into Waterloo.

Or Voyager or FGW HST to Reading, a 165 to Guildford then into London that way. At least then you wouldn't be going North just to go South if you know what i mean.

Birmingham and London are both routing points.
Birmingham-Londons has routing permissions: BP+TV, CS, GC, TV
BP+TV gives:
New St-Nuneaton-(Northampton if desired)-Euston/Kenny O

CS gives:
Brum-(via Solihull or Coventry)-Leamington-Oxford-Reading-Hayes & Harlington-Paddington/Kenny O
Brum-(via Solihull or Coventry)-Leamington-Marylebone
Brum-(via Solihull or Coventry)-Leamington-Oxford-Reading-Guildford-Redhill-Croydon-Clapham Jn-Kenny O
And the Nottingham route discribed earlier, with the odd variation, such as going Lichfield-Tamworth, or Derby-Lougborough direct. Doubling back via Nottingham is allowed becase of the group station rule.

GC gives:
Brum-(via Solihull or Coventry)-Leamington-Greenford-Paddington

TV gives:
New St-Rugby-(Northampton if desired)-Bletchley-Euston/Kenny O

So to answer your questions, Nottingham is allowed, but only if you go via the route describe by haryhandedoldfool, your route via Reading is perfectly fine though.
There are no HSTs Brum-Reading, but if you want one in from either Oxford or Reading, my advice would be to just wait and one will turn up. At Reading wait on the up main platform (platform 5), an at Oxford the platform which you arrive on.
As already stated, a £40.40 saver return will do the trick, but there are no time restrictions on Saturdays or Sundays.
LilLoafs suggestion of going direct from Guildford into Waterloo is not valid, you would have to go via Redhill and into Kenny O (you can of course break your journey at Clapham Jn though).

You could always use WSMR from Tame Bridge a WMSR only anytime return is £32-00 from Tame Bridge, alternatively an any operator via High Wycombe off peak is £34-00 and an any permitted off peak is £42
