A little help

Hi guys,

I just purchased a model train at a charity auction, not realising it was just the train and not a train set! I dont know anything about these things, but I am now the proud owner of Hornby R2888M Flying Scotsman Train Pack Limited Edition (601 of 1200). I paid the best part of £100 and wonder if it is worth hanging on to as an investment (its still boxed and never used)?

Any info appreciated.

Might spur me onto buying a train set now as it does look nice!

That's not bad, as the list price is about £180! If you keep it boxed and never use it, it will appreciate but will take a good few years to make really good money.

Just don't go into any breath-holding competitions, though. Even in the rarefied atmosphere of a charity auction, the set has "appreciated" to approximately half it's original value.

You might as well use it if that was the original intention. If you wait long enough and know when and where to get offload the set you might just get your money back. But an investment...? Frankly I would doubt it. You should do your research and see whether ot not you think it's worth it and then take a decision based on that.

Well thanks for the replies, I have never had or used a train set but thought it might be nice to set up for my nephews, I suppose I will invest in a set at some point after christmas but for now will put the train in my model cabinet as it does look rather nice!
