A Freight Question....

Folks, Can anyone help????

Last month I saw a program on tv and it was the Stobbart Rail Tesco run from England to Scotland. It was a daytime service and there were several crewe changes.

I maybe wrong, however, if there are no other freight runs i believe the driver would merely get on a passenger service to make his way back home.

What happens during the night if there are no other freight runs and no passenger trains. Would he get digs etc...?? Just curious!!!

It has been known for drivers to be put up for the night if they are a long way from their home depot, otherwise the company will just get them a taxi.

Happens all the time with Ballast train workings.
Especially if the train is on site for more than 6 hours. Taxis turning up with new crews and returning the old crew to depot.

Depends on a number of factors such as which is the cheapest option, distance from home depot or when is the driver next on duty and where? etc etc.

Lodging is failry standard in our firm but you get paid extra, breakfast is usually paid for and depending on times you will get an evening meal allowance.

Lodging turns are par for the course for test train drivers and crew. Drivers slightly less so as they are based all over the country and thus can work more "locally", but crews can sometime spend nearly two weeks away depending on the train as they are all Derby based.
