A few routing questions(ish)

Taking my lad to Bolton v Aston Villa on 5th March. Have split my tickets off peak day returns Coleshill to Stoke and Stoke to Horwich. I have a family railcard so the price is about GBP25/26

A couple of questions about the return journey.

Are there extra trains to Manchester after the game?

I notice there is a train back to Manchester Victoria is this permitted (although I would have to walk to Piccadilly)

Also some trains after 18.00 from Manchester route me either via Birmingham or Nuneaton to Coleshill. Are both routes permitted?

Finally, It I changed at Stoke, then Trent Valley could I use this ticket to alight at Sutton Coldfield (for bus connections).

1) Yes, there will be. Expect queues.

2) Yes, it is permitted to go via Manchester, that includes Victoria/Piccadilly, and I believe the tram may be included for any ticket that crosses Manchester (someone local to the area can confirm). Due to queues to get to Manchester it may be quicker to go to the other platform and change at Wigan, however that wouldn't be valid with a Stoke ticket.

3) Yes, you could go via Birmingham or via Nuneaton.

4) Change at Stoke, then go to Lichfield Trent Valley, and then a train toward Birmingham? Providing the route is valid there is no problem finishing your journey short at an intermediate station such as Sutton Coldfield. However it appears that this route isn't a mapped route, and it isn't the shortest route either.

You can do Coleshill to Stoke on the following maps:
BP+TV (basically allows you to go via the Trent Valley)
CC (basically allows you to go via Birmingham/Wolves) perhaps surprisingly you are allowed to take the line via Walsall but you are not allowed to take the line via Sutton Coldfield.

You can do Stoke to Horwich on the following maps:
EM+MH (can't see the point in EM but this basically only allows you to go via Manchester)
NW (ditto, you have to go via Manchester)

I believe you can, Coleshill is both B'ham and Nuneaton so I see no problem there.

However, I am still very much an amateur so don't take my word for it!

Travel via Metrolink in the city centre is only included for journeys wholly within Greater Manchester where 'rte Metrolink' is shown on the ticket. All other journeys require a seperate ticket to be purchased. (Source - FRPP)

Perhaps the Op could change at Salford Cresent if it isn't too late at night.

In that case replace this (adult fares shown below):

SOT - HWI SVR £15.30

With these two:

SOT - SPT CDR £11.10 (or £8.40 for Virgin Trains only) plus
SPT - HWI CDR £3.60 (Valid on Metrolink)

Total = £14.70

The ticketing sites and nationalrail all tell you to take the 'METRO' to connect betweek Piccadilly and Victoria - there is no mention anywhere I can see of having to buy a separate ticket.

True, but regardless, it is not valid unless it says 'rte Metrolink'.

The only exception for this would be tickets to Metrolink destinations (obviously) and tickets to Manchester Ctlz.
