A blast from the past....

I was on an Inverness-Aberdeen service recently, and the Guard was quite obviously an ex BR veteran, going by his mannerisms and the fact he looked 60+.
On the approach to Aberdeen, whilst doing the usual arrival preamble, e.g. "We'll soon be arriving in, take your luggage etc", he referred to Aberdeen as "Aberdeen Joint Station".
Now bearing mind it hasn't been officially referred to as Aberdeen Joint Station since at least 1948, it just goes to show that this fellow obviously served his 'time' with a good few of the older generation, perhaps even those around in GNSR/CR/NBR days.
Very occasionally, I also hear Guards describe Dundee as 'Dundee Tay Bridge' during announcements, despite Dundee having lost its other stations a half century ago.
Anyone else have a similar tale of times past remembered?

Try explaining to a tourist that wants to Nottingham when arriving off ECML service in Newark that they need to go to Newark Castle station, sounds far to like Newcatle to some ears.
Be lot easier if it went back to Newark Midland & Newark North as Newark Northgate station is not even on located on Northgate in Newark

Quite a lot of the older generation whom I know in Northampton still refer to Northampton station as Castle Station.

Leamington Spa gets announced as Leamington Spa General by a couple of the Chiltern guards. I had to pull one of them up for calling Dorridge "Knowle & Dorridge" though. A wink and a nod to those on board who know their history is all well and good, but when changing the name of a station drastically for the sake of nostalgia that only a tiny percentage of people on board will get risks passengers who dont travel very often being over carried then it is not good practice.

Sometimes Wigan North Western is announced as Wigan North West, which always makes my teeth grate. But then IMO the 2 Wigan stations should perhaps be treated as one - they're just across the street from each other after all.

If you want to enter "Rugby Midland" on your sheet you should fill it "In" not "Out".

Elderly local people still refer to Howden station as North Howden. This harks back to the days when Howden had two stations on two lines: North Howden on the LNER (about a mile from the town!) and South Howden on the Hull and Barnsley. South Howden was closed to passengers in 1955 and completely in 1959!

Years ago (late '70s) an announcement at Brighton detailed a service from platform 1 as the West Coastway service to West Worthing, calling at Holland Road Halt, Hove, Aldrington Dyke Junction, Portslade and West Hove....


Holland Road Halt closed in 1956
Dyke Junction was renamed Aldrington Halt when the Dyke Branch closed in 1939
Portslade & West Hove dropped the West Hove part some time late 1960s I believe...

Soem journey planners and railway staff still use Lincoln Central, St Marks closed in May 1985 from what I can remember...a modern day interchange with the bus station across the road...alas progress
